So my playstation crapped out on me last night and after looking online it seems I have the YLOD. My PS3 is a 40g fat model that is 4 years old. I read of the hair dryer fix but wanted to see if anyone has done that before I try. I figure I'll have to buy a new one but want to try to get my saved games. I guess if there is any time for it to break, right before the holiday sales is the best time for it to break.

Sorry to hear that. I also have the 40G fat. Mines also about 5 yrs old...i've been waiting for it to happen to me. I dont know about yours but my console has gotten extreme HEAVY use over the last 5 yrs between myself,my kids and all the movie watching. Its probably "on" for an avg of 10 hrs a day(no kidding).

Were there any warning signs before it gave out?
Look at it this way...at least it wasnt your 3rd xbox crapping out in as many years :) for all the pissing contests between these two console's(and IMO xbox does bring a better product to the table in some areas)...Sony's console is simply designed to last longer and thats important to me.

Good luck and have fun shopping :)

Damn, my PS3 wasn't on nearly that long. I would watch movies or netflix while I was doing something else so that added to the hours that it was on. I think my biggest problem was my placement. It could breathe out of the back vents but it was right next to my DVD player so it couldn't breathe off the side.

I had no warning signs. I had put in a movie to watch and it shut off a few minutes in. When I went to turn it on it would boot up for a second then shut off.

Very true about the xbox. It seems like every one of my friends who has an xbox is on their 2nd system at the very least.
