“The Matrix Reloaded!”

If Suns President Bryan Colangelo’s gleeful reaction to watching Shawn Marion’s first informal workout on Tuesday was any indication, the team is expecting their All-Star forward to pick right up where he left off last season.

2002-03 was a banner year for Marion. He finished the year as the only NBA player to be ranked in the top 20 in points (17th, 21.2) and top 10 in rebounds (8th, 9.5) and steals (3rd, 2.28). He also scored eight points, pulled down seven rebounds, had four assists and three steals in his first All-Star Game.

“Shawn’s great, man,” said veteran center Scott Williams. “He brings a lot of energy to the game. His athleticism, to be able to fly up and down on the wing and finish above the rim, it’s exciting to be out on the court with him.”

If Shawn looks a little more exciting this year, it’s because he had a little work done during the offseason. Actually, he was the one doing the work. Marion added 12 pounds of muscle to his 6-7 frame, with the help of trainer Tim Grover. If his name sounds familiar, that’s because he’s “The Trainer to the NBA Stars” with a client list that includes Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Juwan Howard.

“Tim’s who I worked with all summer,” Marion said. “He has a great strength and conditioning program, so that’s all I’ve been doing, just lifting weights, man. That was really it, lifting weights.

“(I wanted) more endurance, more strength, baby. That’s why I did it. I’m stronger. I can post up more and go inside more.”

Pumping iron is one thing, but running the court works a whole different set of muscles. Marion didn’t look like he was huffing and puffing on his first day, but being his first workout, it would be understandable if he was. His personal session included plenty of rebounding, dunking and his trademark inside play.

“I got a little drained (today) at first playing 4-on-4,” he admitted. “Everyone gets loose the first couple of games.”

Coach Frank Johnson wanted Marion to work on ball handling for the new season so the forward can make plays without having to “rely on other ball handlers to get him the ball.” Shawn’s newfound strength was also one of the things Johnson urged the All-Star to work on for two reasons during the offseason. He felt it would help Marion in the frontcourt and also help him endure the rigors of an 82-game season.

“You need that extra strength to get you through,” Johnson said. “Staying on a good weight program can get you over that hump. Shawn also realized he needed the added weight to handle the position.

“His body looked great. I’m impressed with that. A lot of times you see where you just got big up top, (but) it appears he’s added weight in his legs, as well. I don’t know how much playing he did with that weight to get use to it, but I’m impressed.”

As for his first look at the newly bulked up Matrix, Johnson got a sneak peek on Monday. The two ran into each other at AWA when Marion stopped in and saw his coach.

“I heard about the (weight),” Johnson laughed, “so I told him to take off his shirt. How about a guy asking another guy to take off his shirt? He was more than happy to do that. He looked great. Now he’s walking down here without his shirt. He wants to show it off.”

New muscles won’t be only thing the All-Star shows off once the season gets underway. Brimming with new confidence, Marion is anxious to show what he can do when he hits the court.

Wouldn't it be great if Marion could develop Cedric Ceballos's talents for finishing around the basket?

Yeah, it would be great, but I'd like to see him develop at least Mugsy Bogues' ability to score in traffic first....

Baby steps..

He has the ability to score around the basket.

I like this becasue he sounds confident. He wants to take it inside.

It was never an issue if he could or couldn't own inside, he was just to scared after he he got knocked out.

The Phxsuns.net group of posters is scared because they think the article basically says that Shawn will play a lot of power forward. That may be true, but I find it funny that they are even discussing that, when many of us here (and there I'd imagine) were screaming for a year and a half for Shawn to take it to the hole more. Now that he seems to be adopting that kind of mindset, people don't want him to...

I think the extra stength will help him a lot defensively.
Imagine a more athletic Ron Artest.

On phxsuns.net they are putting words in Frank Johnsons' mouth because he said it will help him in the frontcourt.
However the SF position is part of the frontcourt so there is no reason to think that he will play more PF than last season, especially not in a lineup with Zarko and Amare at PF and C.

I guess this concerns me some.

Shawn's advantage has been his quickness and his pogo-stick-like quick leaping ability. Extra upper body bulk, even if it is muscle, has the likely potential of slowing him down.

Its fine if he is replacing upper body fat with muscle, but Shawn never had much fat on him.

Here's hoping the changes are all good.

Then again, 17 extra pounds doesn't make him David Boston all of a sudden either.

If it were me, I wouldn't be concerned about him developing more of a power game, but I certainly would be concerned about him playing "power forward" -- because that would probably make him the second-largest Sun on the court, which means more small ball.

I don't ever want to see Marion playing power forward, but I'd be happy for him to get more of his points inside. Small forwards can have postup games too.

I was thinking that too, but Marion's extraordinary leaping ability may not be the most important part of his game anymore, so perhaps it would be a fair exchange even if he did give some of it up for strength. With Stoudemire playing more and Cabarkapa also looking like a solid rebounder, I expect Marion's rebounds to go down pretty much no matter what. He'll always be able to dunk, so that's not a concern. He wasn't really putting his jumping to good use for other offensive purposes, because he doesn't have a real jump shot. (I'm talking mechanics, not accuracy; for his shots from the perimeter, he hardly jumps at all.) And defensively, he leaves his feet too much anyway. It's possible that a more muscular Marion is exactly what the Suns need, even if it does mean he won't show up on highlight reels quite as often.

I definitely agree. I'm sure his weight was gained w/o the use of "vitamins". Which is a good thing.

This could be a break-out year for Marion. Do you all remember when Scottie Pippen entered the league? Well, his game went to the next level when his body matured and he got serious about his body.

The same thing is going to happen to Marion. Your game enters new dimensions when you get stronger. Not only will it enable him to withstand the long schedule, but players will finally start bouncing off of him.

Watch his confidence soar.

I'm not sure he put on 30 lbs., but he did both up considerably. Didn't he played at 140-100 45 lbs. last year? He was much, much stronger... that's for sure.

Wo,wo,wo guys......

They said 12 lbs, not 17...and he was skinny to begin with.

They said not only was his upper body bigger, but his lower body grew proportionally...pretty much...they said his legs looked bigger too...so I expect no dropoff in anything, and a huge upgrade in physicalness...yes 12 lbs isn't much, but he held his own already when he was that skinny, that 12lbs should really help him as they said through the rigors of the 82 game season...man i'm giddy.
