Pundit reveals what he thinks is Enzo Maresca’s “biggest mistake” this season

Nigel Reo-Coker believes the biggest mistake Enzo Maresca made was when he said the Blues weren’t in a title race.

Chelsea started the season brilliantly and found themselves in second with a chance to momentarily go top before Christmas.

However, they were held to goalless draw by Everton and things haven’t been the same since, with Maresca now under growing pressure following the disappointing 2-2 draw with Ipswich on Sunday.

Reo-Coker on biggest Maresca mistake

Maresca’s job is believed to be safe for now, but a number of supporters have had enough of the Italian and want to see a a change in the dugout.

The drop off since Christmas has been quite something and the Blues now find themselves in sixth place, whilst they look a shadow of the side they were earlier in the season.

Chelsea are struggling to score goals and their style of play has been heavily criticised in recent weeks, with fans frustrated by the playing out from the back.

Maresca is coming under increased pressure.

There are a number of issues at the club, but former Premier League player Reo-Coker has revealed what he thinks Maresca’s biggest mistake has been.

“Whether you are a manager or not, you have always got to show ambition, so the biggest mistake he made was when they were on that great run and he tried to say they weren’t in the title race,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“From then on, it has started to slowly go wrong for them.

“It’s not good for Maresca and it’s almost like he’s talking himself out of Stamford Bridge because of the response he is getting from fans.

“You have to be ambitious when you’ve spent that much, when you have those young players and when you are managing Chelsea. That club is built around winning because of the success they have had in recent history.
