Mar. 26—The Austin boys track and field team didn't have a state qualifier last year, but the team has some individuals already circling big goals as the season slowly gets underway.

Austin juniors Thomas Asmus, Triumph Ogbeide and Carter Holt don't just have big goals for themselves, they also have a high passion for supporting all of their teammates throughout the year.

"We have a lot of young people on the team this year," said Holt, who runs sprints and competes in the long jump. "We're really trying to set an example as the older guys on the team. The group of guys that we have make it a lot of fun. That's more important to me than the actual running, especially with our relay teams."

Ogbeide has excelled in the hurdles in the past and his goal is to get to state in one of those races or a sprint relay. While he was a bit of a natural at running hurdles, Ogbeide is still working hard to improve on the finer details of the event.

"It's not just running," Ogbeide said. "You need to take the time in practice to work on your legs and get over the hurdles. Personally, I was pretty good at that early on. I just need to work on getting faster."

When they're not competing, Ogbeide and many of the other Packers are running down the sideline cheering on teammates like Asmus, who competes in the distance races and distance relays.

"We're connected as a team like a family and we all love the sport," Ogbeide said. "We support each other at every event. I'm always cheering on my boy Thomas 'the Tank Engine.'"

Asmus will also be a contender to get to state, but it's not something he's obsessed with. He mostly wants to make the most of the season and enjoy the little improvements that he'll make throughout the year.

"I think I could have a chance for state, but I'm just here to have fun," Asmus said. "Everyone's kind of excited. We have a fun energy and people are excited about the season. No matter how long the meets are, even if they go until 11 p.m., they're always fun. With practice, even if it's a cold miserable day, you're still going to have fun."

Austin will compete at Albert Lea at 4:30 p.m. on April 8 and the Packers will host an invite at 4:30 p.m. on April 11.
