The PWHL unveiled their plans for a series of "Unity Games" celebrating Pride over the net month. It includes a new logo designed by Hamilton, Ontario-based artist Eli. Eli is "a queer and transgender creative whose work is deeply rooted in themes of identity, resilience, and self-expression."
The celebrations will support the LGBTQ+ community through programming, in-game tributes, and partnerships with LGBTQ+ organizations.
New York will host the first PWHL Pride game of the season March 22 at the Prudential Center when they host the Ottawa Charge.
Minnesota will host their game March 30 against Toronto, followed by Montreal's Pride game on April 1 against New York. Boston will hold the final pre-World Championship Pride game on April 2 against Ottawa.
After returning from World's, the league will resume their celebrations in Ottawa on April 26, and in Toronto on April 29.
Eli's logo, according to the league, represents "the ongoing fight for visibility, self-acceptance, and equality within hockey and beyond."
“My goal was to create a playful, bold image FOR the LBGTQ+ community rather than ABOUT us,” said Eli. “I aimed to bring something we’ve never seen before in a typical flag Pride logo, taking inspiration from different aspects of the queer/trans experience. The bright and bold nature of the design reflect the brightness and boldness found within the queer and trans community.”
The artwork will be printed on commemorative shirts available at each Pride game and on the official PWHL shops. The PWHL also committed this month to make a contribution to the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center.
