I'm a newbie from the frozen Chicago west suburbs and love to read this site. There are so many knowledgeable people here and the debates are usually civil. I found this on the official site of the Cardinals and liked what I read about John Lott and especially how the Cardinals are completely redoing the workout facility. It seems like they are making investments everywhere and that is encourging.
Recently azcardinals.com had the opportunity to sit down with one of the newest additions to the 2007 Cardinals coaching staff, Strength and Conditioning Coach John Lott.
After spending the previous two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Lott comes to Arizona with a decade of experience in the NFL and is notorious for maximizing the potential of all of his athletes. A native of Denton, Texas, Lott played four seasons at North Texas and also had a brief stint in the NFL with the Steelers.
What are your expectations from the players?
“I just hope they are open-minded and I want them to know that we are going to try and start a new chapter here. The direction that the Bidwill’s are going and Rod Graves, (they) have obviously made a commitment to what we’re going to try to do here. My expectations of the players are going to be high. My expectations are high for them so I am not going to drop mine; I want them to get their expectations up.”
When it comes to training what is your philosophy?
"My (philosophy) is more free weights, a lot dynamic movements outside, and we are going to do Olympic movements inside.”
This is a new team for you, do you think it will be difficult to adapt to the players?
“Not at all because we are all in this thing together. We’re all trying to get this thing going and get a championship. It is fun to be in this system because the ownership wants to win and they have proven that and we have a phenomenal staff here. A lot of us are very familiar with each other which is going to be important when we come out of a room with one voice. It’s not difficult because of the simple fact that a quarterback is a quarterback, and a running back is a running back, but they all need the same thing. I always take the same approach wherever I am. I think guys will appreciate it because they will see that we are here to put them in the best positions to succeed. I think once they see that, they will appreciate it.”
How many guys are on your staff?
“Two. Myself and my man Keith (Vulgamott).”
You have had experience working with college athletes, but what is it about working with professional athletes that makes you love your job so much?
“I have been working with professional athletes for so long and the thing is it is a job, it’s a love, and it’s a passion that they have worked and strived to get to since they were little. It is a privilege for all of us to be working in the NFL and the difference is you can be apart of that greatness. They are a joy to work with because they are at the ultimate in our sport.”
What is the most unique aspect of your training program?
“The one thing that is going to be different will be the use of the medicine ball. It is something a little more unique in this program. I really try to cut body fat, try to increase the stamina and endurance of the player, and (all of that) helps them be in a position to succeed on the field.”
Right now we are in the off-season, can you walk us through a typical workout for the players?
“During the off-season the workouts are going to be a lot longer. We are going to go in groups at like 7 A.M. or 730, or 10 or 10 30, 1 or 130. They can come in whatever group they want to come in. It is going to be a four day split. Mondays and Thursdays we’re going to do upper body and then go outside and run. On Tuesdays and Fridays we go outside and do some plyometrics and then come inside and lift.”
Over the years you have always found a way to individualize workouts for players, can you touch on that a little bit?
“I sit down with each guy and meet with them one-on-one. During the season you are going to have more individualized tapered workouts. Primarily because of different needs and because of the time. During the season I am really here for the coaches, but during the off-season I am really trying to build a chemistry where players work together and look to the left and right and see a guy that they have been working with for awhile. It is going to be tailored to big men, middle men, and little men. Big men o-line and d-line, middle men linebackers, fullbacks, tight ends, and kicker and the little men, the defensive backs, receivers, and running backs.”
Will there be any additions to the Cardinals weight room?
“We are getting rid of everything, but the lights. We are getting new carpets, a new floor, new squat racks, new benches, new dumbbells, medicine balls, cabinets, and it is really going to be a lot.”
