THIS ONE IS FOR YOU KOC. TIM WE DID IT.
When he first was traded all of the local interviews were saying he was sad, disapointed etc. One paper even had him saying "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" when he was told he was traded.
I watched his interview with Ahmad Rishad (spelling) and all he kept saying was how happy he was when he heard the news and his first question was "When am I leaving" with a big smile on his face. I know you guys follow the Suns alot more than I do so any insight would help on what really happened.

My guess. He said he was sad to Phoenix reporters and said he was really happy to New York reporters.

Of course, he was so excited to get a chance to play with Van Horn. :D

One of the interviews I read Marbury said something to the effect of.

BC woke him up at like 8am, and told him he had been traded. He was completely stunned, and not very happy. He asked to who, and when he heard it was NY, it made things alright. Basically, he said the fact he was going home took a lot of the sting away.

This is just Marbury trying to act like he wasn't hurt. I heard him on the radio. He sounded like he was going to cry. He said he was disappointed that the Suns had blown things up. I read somewhere that he was very upset and hurt. That was coming from one of the Phoenix Suns players. He's just trying to be positive now.

That's my $.02.

Marbury had 10 assists but shot only 3 of 8. Who is this guy and what did you do with Stephon? :D

Maybe this spanking will simmer the NY media.

You'd think they acquired Magic Bird.

I agree, I heard him also. He was clearly upset.

I am sure the team being NY made it alot better.

I'm definitely sure that being traded to New York helped to soften the blow. I don't doubt that he is NOW happy about the trade. However when he was first traded he was definitely upset about it.

Guys, can't you please watch the game first before you badmouth Steph just for the stats?

In the first qtr, I think he just took one shot or maybe even none, but had 4 assists already and the Knicks lead as many as 10 pts. Then, he let van Horn and Houston try their one-on-one moves against supposedly weaker defenders, who both floundered bigtime at this task and lost the shooting touch completely after the 2nd qtr. Marbury had been double and triple teamed all game, could not shoot much but always able to find the open men, who just couldn't finish with all the space Steph created for them. It also didn't help that first Taylor then Yao completely dominated in the 2nd half. The rest is history.

BTW, Marbury never held the ball very long in his hand the whole game long. Maybe he was trying too hard again to let his teammates shine first, yet with a negative total effect. Anyway, there is no other PG that comes close to him at creating for the teammates. With time and good coaching, and good fitting pieces around him, his team will definitely shine.

I like Steph, especially after hearing him on the radio right afterwards. I hope he doesn't hold a grudge against the Suns. Sometimes I wish an organization cared for their players as much as some players cared for them. When teams get upset that players are always looking for more money they should look in the mirror. I don't hate the trade though, I think the trade is going to work out for the best with us. I just hope we don't lose our reputation as a great organization to play for. People used to take pay cuts to be on our team... Now they might be thinking, why should I give my heart to the Suns when they are willing to trade me at any time?

I remember Manning taking a big pay cut to be with us and Chapman, they loved being with our team. Do you think they would take a pay cut to be with us today after seeing how quickly we discard players?

Manning's career was in the dumper when he signed with the Suns (mostly due to injuries). He became a very good role player. Perhaps he would have preferred to stay with the Suns, but he was given a chance to become a starter in Orlando. In his last year in Phoenix, he started only 5 games and averaged 23.7 minutes.

I went back and looked at Chapman's stats with the Suns and they weren't all that impressive. He hit some terribly big shots, but his shooting dropped dramatically his last two years: 35.9% in 98-99 and 38.8% in 99-00.

When we look at some of the other players the Suns have moved like Rogers and Delk, the rational was pretty strong Rogers was in the last year of his contract and the Suns got JJ and pick they used for Casey.

The Kidd deal and the later Marbury deal were both driven by econimcs. The Suns were convinced that Kidd would jump when his contract ran out (the negoiations with SA showed that was not an unreasonable concern). The Marbury deal was too good to pass up.

About the only deal that might be questioned in the last five years was unloading Cliff Robinson. I know he did not want to go, although I think he enjoyed his time in Detroit.

Considering the record, I do not see the Suns being especially "unloyal" to their key players. They move their second line and backup guys pretty frequently, but do not swap starters all that often. Certainly no as often as some people on this board would like.

you're way off with the comment about danny manning. when he signed with us, for considerably less than fmv, he was the prize of the fa market. and tisdale, who also signed that offseason, wasn't far behind. remember the cover of SI with both of 'em on it suns' uniforms? manning was very good for us before he re-injured himself. tisdale was never great.

and sexy rex also signed with us for below fmv 'cuz he liked the organization. he gave us what we needed, nothing more.

They signed Manning back in the days when it was possible to sign a guy to a cheap short term contract and then sign him for big bucks later. He was certainly a high visibility signing because he was a former #1 pick and one of the greatest college players ever. None the less, his history of injuries made him less desirable than his talent would have justified. The Suns took a gamble and it worked.

As for Rex, he retired due to injuries and stayed with the organization as a scout.

If I recall correctly Manning had a lot of offers before signing with us and he to several million off his contract to sign with us...something incredible like only 20% of the amount of what he was offered from other teams or something like that...

As for Rex yeah he got injured but a lot of teams wanted him before they knew what would happen to him...he also took quite a bit less money to be on our team. Are we looking at how they played after signing with us or are we comparing how much they would of made with another team?

Yeah, George is way off base on his Manning assessment. Atlanta thought highly enough of him to trade Dominique Wilkins AND a first-round pick to the Clippers for him. He'd been averaging 23ppg in LA, but slipped to 16 in Atlanta. The following season he signed a 1 year, 1 million dollar contract with the Suns and proceeded to average 18 points and 6 boards OFF THE BENCH.

As far as a history of injury, he blew his knee out his rookie year, and again in 94 when Kleine got in his way in practice. In between, he played in 370 out of a possible 410 games. 8 games missed per year on average is far from injury prone.

You're probably right. The old deal where guys could be signed for minimal contracts and then get big contracts later have been minimized by the new agreement. The Suns had great luck with it.

yeah, the new deal sucks 'cuz it really gave the suns a leg up on the competition. people wanted to sign with us and cash wasn't an issue 'cuz it could be made up on the back end.
