What?
My kid has become a hockey freak and asked me how the point system works. Being a hockey dork I have no idea and truthfully it has had me baffled for quite some time. The question is thus:

A team has a record of 19-24-15-8. Hypothetically. So that equals:

19-wins
24-losses
15-ties
8-?

What the heck is the 8? And how does it effect the rankings? Thanks for the help.

That last number is overtime losses, the team gets one point.

2 Point for win
1 point for tie
1 point for overtime loss

19-Wins ... multiplied by 2
24-Losses
15-Ties ... multiplied by 1
8-Overtime Losses ... multiplied by 1

(19W X 2)+(15T X 1)+(8OTL X 1) = 38+15+8 = 61 points

Overtime Losses ... every game that is tied at the end of regulation goes into a 4-on-4 5 minute overtime period. If the game is still tied at the end of those 5 minutes the game ends in a draw, but if the other team scores you still earn 1 point for making it to the end of regulation with the scored tied.

If a team scores a goal in the OT they get an extra point after the tie.

Now, if a team pulls their goalie in a regulation game OT period and allows a goal they no longer get the point they earned for tying the game at the end of the 3rd period.
