I don't usually do these hypothetical trade scenarios, but one sticks out in my mind that could really help this D-Backs lineup.

There's no doubt that Arizona needs another consistent power bat in the lineup to take this team back to the championship level. There's just no getting around it. With that being said, I think Florida's Mike Lowell could really help this team out.

Lowell is supposed to be on the block by the deadline, and Florida's speed crazed manager may even consider taking Tony Womack for half a season. Especially if Arizona picks up the tab. Now, certainly there would be other prospects involved and I'm not as up to date as others on who those guys might be. Probably some pitchers and John Patterson may even be brought up. Either way I say do it.

By doing it you would add a right handed bat who can hit 5th at a fairly reasonable rate (3.7 million).

My ideal lineup would then shake out like this:

vs. LH

SS- Counsell (L)
2B- Spivey (R)
1B- Baerga (S)
LF- Gonzalez (L)
3B- Lowell (R)
RF- Bautista (R)
CF- Finley (L)
C- Moeller/Barajas (R)

Bench
1B- Grace (L), Overbay (L)
3B/1B- Williams (R)
OF- McCracken (S), Dellucci (L)
C- Moeller/Barajas (R)

vs. RH

SS- Counsell (L)
2B- Spivey (R)
1B- Overbay (L)
LF- Gonzalez (L)
3B- Lowell (R)
CF- Finley (L)
RF- Dellucci (L)
C- Moeller/Barajas (R)

Bench
1B- Grace (L)
3B/1B - Williams (R)
1B/2B/3B - Baerga (S)
OF- McCracken (S), Bautista (R)
C- Moeller/Barajas (R)

The only problem may be the lack of a reserve SS, a problem that I would solve by handing someone a $10 million check and walking papers, coupled w/ bringing up Alex Cintron.

But do you think that Bob Brenly would allow any RH power hitting 3B to join the D'backs while Matt Williams is here?

What would Matty be? An $8 million bullpen catcher?_

Peter Gammons said the other night on Baseball Tonight that Richie Sexton would look good in a Diamondbacks uniform. Makes you wonder if Peter knows something.

Therein lies the dilemma. Sadly, I do not.
And actually it would be a $10 million dollar bullpen catcher. Maybe he can coach 3rd instead.

I agree, but Milwaukee would probably want AZ to take Hammonds and the $7.5 with him. No thanks.
Overbay is already entrenched there, so I doubt the organization would be looking for an upgrade, although it is one. Also, the D-Backs don’t seem to like power hitters. Besides Gonzalez, I can’t really think of any that they have kept.
I can name 4 that they haven’t. (Batista, Cabrera, Durazo, Sanders)
Sexton ($3.1 mill) is affordable, though, and he could hit cleanup.

The answer to where does Richie Sexton play is - in the spot of the person he was traded for - Lyle Overbay. This is Lyle's first season so for the next three years he will cost major league minimum

In other words a guy a team like the Brewers would love to have, cheap and presumably good.

Didn't Sexton play the outfield when he was with Cleveland. While he would be a liability defensively his bat would be great. Overbay has a 10 game hitting streak and hitting .370. So he is not the problem. CC needs to be playing every day. I think Mike Lowell would be a more realistic choice. Baerga is good but dont know if he is an everyday player any more. Matt Williams is a cancer to the lineup when he is in the game. He is so unproductive it is pitifile. Why is he playing at all and batting ahead of Overbay. Time to just bite the bullet and designate him for assignment
