VDSL is not fiber its' just fast DSL.The current fastest is VDSL2, the V stands for very fast.

Ikanos has been the industry leader in VDSL for several years now(Based in Fremont). Last year they bought the DSL business from my company(Centillium) when we abandoned DSL. That included our VDSL2 product which was competing with theirs. The theoretical max speed is 250 MB but I think in practice nobody is actually getting even 200 yet. Japan has had 100MB DSL for several years so VDSL2 is twice as fast for them and exponentially faster in the US.

Wikipedia has a ton of good information on it. My company initially didn't get involved in VDSL because it deteriorates very quickly depending on how far the user is from the CO, so we felt it was a niche market. Ikanos was making more revenue on VDSL than we were on DSL so we decided to jump into VDSL2 but before we ever got it going, we sold to Ikanos.

So you'll definitely be getting much faster speeds but not fiber speeds.

I'm interested to see just how fast it actually turns out to be in practice.
