Since the Raiders announced the release of punter Marquette King Mar. 30, the reaction from Raiders fans has spanned the range from approving all the way to absolute rage. Despite the temptation for fans to treat every NFL decision as if it happens in a vacuum and is done hastily, each roster move involves executives and coaching staffs going through the process of careful evaluation and deliberation. As such, here is why releasing King was a two-part decision by Gruden and McKenzie. Gruden openly solicited the services of dozens of former Raiders players at his Jan. 9 introductory press conference, letting them know that he was going to need their help in getting some of the younger core of the team to buy into his methodologies.
