Prospect evaluation is about more than just production, measurables and traits. Scheme fit can play as much of a role whether or not a player will work out for a team.
This is even more prevalent with wide receiver prospects. How a receiver plays the position as well as what kind of routes he runs can dictate both his ability to play in the league and his role in a new offensive system.
Pro Football Focus’ Lauren Gray took this idea and applied to the 2025 receiver class to determine which players’ route trees fit best on which teams.
The Los Angeles Rams popped up for two specific pass-catchers: Missouri’s Luther Burden III and Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka.
Burden III was targeted mostly out, hitch and screen routes in 2024, per PFF. Those three routes were among the highest for the Rams this past season. While it’s not a direct correlation to offensive success for Burden III, it does mean he’d have a good head start on building his role in L.A.
Similarly, Egbuka was targeted on a lot of out and hitch, but actually had the most targets on crossing routes. The Rams ran the second-most crossing routes in 2024 (behind only the Buffalo Bills) as well as the aforementioned out and hitch routes.
Either player would be a good fit in Sean McVay’s offense, but his role would be limited at first behind Adams, Nacua and possibly even Tutu Atwell and Jordan Whittington depending on how quickly either pick up the offense.

“Four NFL teams recorded 85 or more out-route targets in 2024, with the Rams leading the way (88),” Gray wrote. “The Rams targeted crossing and hitch routes at high rates last season, and while Burden tallied only 10 crossing targets over the past two seasons, he logged 19 hitch targets in that span, securing 16 passes for 180 yards. In all, Burden forced 30 missed tackles in his career and generated 56 catches of 15-plus yards, giving the Rams an electric playmaker to fill Kupp’s void in the slot (1,034 career snaps) at Pick No. 26. Burden is not projected to last that long, and the Rams have other needs to address (30th in pass blocking and 21st in coverage), but he would be too good to pass up if available.”

“The Rams again could be interested late in the first round, even if a No. 3 receiver feels like a luxury pick,” Gray wrote. “Like Burden, Egbuka offers elite ability in a role they still need to fill.”
