There is a movie titled Thursday that is way different from the norm. Good movie, not many have heard of it.

I've seen **********. Believe me, you're not missing anything. Very tame by today's porn standards.

I kind of doubt any of these movies are "banned." That would be...well, illegal.

What about Song of the South? While not "banned", it is extremely rare. Disney won't release it.

Not in the U.S. on home video. I remember going to see this in the theater when I was little. I enjoyed the stories Uncle Remus told but what I understand as to why the movie isn't released here is that it allegedly shows slavery in a good light. At least this is what I've read.
Do you mean where is it illegal to ban films? In America.

It's one thing is a private company decides not to make, release or show a film. It's quite another for it to be banned.

So what you're saying is that child porn movies are perfectly legal and protected by the 1st amendment? Seriously though. There are movies banned all over the world. And there are some pretty sick movies out there like some of those Japanese torture porn movies that aren't banned here. But I'd venture a gues that distributing child porn movies is severely frowned upon.

Not exactly. It is HEAVILY stereotyped, that is the issue. Not just with Uncle Remus, but the Brer characters themselves.

Well, the stories were gathered from an old ex-slave who told them to the guy who wrote the book so the stereotypes were from an actual slave.

One of the arguments for releasing it is that it's definitely something that's a sign of the times. Gone with the Wind and a lot of movies from before the 40s have a lot of racial stereotyping, but they are still out there. What Disney should do is just market it as a collector's movie, not a Pixar extravaganza.

I guess it makes it difficult when Disney creates a huge ride around the characters--kids might see Song of the South on a store shelf and want it, even though it may not exactly be the best thing for youngsters to watch. Of course, in the end it should be up to the parents to teach the kids anyway.

I think I've got a digital copy.

I remember seeing it as a kid. I believe it was part of one of the summer movie series (usually 10 films aimed at kids/teens shown every weekend during the summer). Checked wikipedia and it was in theaters in 1986.

Also from wikipedia:

In March 2010, Disney CEO Robert Iger reiterated that there are no current plans to release the movie on DVD, calling the film 'antiquated' and 'fairly offensive'. Most recently, however, on November 15th, 2010, Disney creative director Dave Bossert stated in an interview, “I can say there’s been a lot of internal discussion about 'Song of the South'. And at some point we’re going to do something about it. I don’t know when, but we will. We know we want people to see 'Song of the South' because we realize it’s a big piece of company history, and we want to do it the right way.”

In other words, they don't want to release it like they do their animated fare. Personally, I don't see why they didn't add it to their "Walt Disney Treasures" line of DVDs, which I loved:

30 different releases, of which I have about 24. Mostly vintage Disney animation, but other cool stuff as well.

To my complete and utter disgust.

I saw it at a kiddee matinee, sponsored by Disney. I, and all the little 9-year olds I saw it with, emerged from the experience without becoming little 9-year old bigots.

I saw Song of the South recently and I thought it was very good. There are obvious racial stereotypes but many movies of that time had them, especially since it was about a slave and the slave-owners child. What I find most amusing is that Splash Mountain still uses these characters and one of Disney's most famous songs, Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, is from the movie. No children even know who Brer Rabbit is when they go on the ride. I think Disney needs to release the movie and let people choose for themselves if they want to see it or not.

I saw Song of the South for the first time recently on a cyberspace acquired DVD. It is a decent film and hopefully they will release some form of the film one day. I didn't see it as showing slavery in a good light at all. The story was good.

 There's a difference between committing a crime and filming it and the government "banning" or censuring movie.

But there have been films banned in some states throughout the years, however, there has never one that was widely banned. Hell, if Birth of a Nation didn't get banned, nothing will.

I sold off most of the ones from the 1st and 2nd wave I had.

Personally, I think Disney has much more to lose releasing Song of the South than it gains...

Which films? If a film was banned by the government you can bet it could be challenged as unconstitutional.

I just googled banned films and there were a few that were banned in certain areas. One, IIRC allegedly depicted children giving oral sex. I'm not making that up. The Tin Drum I believe it's called.

I saw that movie years ago. Don't remember anything like what you are describing, although it was a long time ago. Weird movie, though.

It actually won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, I think it was 1979.
