The unloading of veteran Diamondbacks continues, as they've shipped reliever Chad Qualls to the Rays for a player to be named later. The Rays will pay the entire $1.48MM remaining on Qualls' contract, keeping interim GM Jerry Dipoto's streak alive of not sending cash in his transactions.

Qualls, 31, began the season as Arizona's closer but lost the gig by mid-June. He has an 8.29 ERA, 8.1 K/9, and 3.6 BB/9 in 38 innings on the season with five home runs allowed. Silver lining: he tossed a scoreless inning last night and there's almost no way his batting average on balls in play remains at .434. The Rays' pen is in good shape, especially from the right side, so Qualls is something of a luxury for the wild card leaders.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal first tweeted the Rays' serious interest in Qualls, with MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reporting the agreement.

I am surprised anyone would want him. He was a good pitcher but has been terrible this year. Maybe a change of scenery would help him

Kirk Gibson has already started him throwing sinkers instead of sliders. Qualls retired the side with two strikeouts in his final D'backs inning yesterday.

But he needs a change of scenery.

Of course, he has never shown the strentgh to be the Man in the bullpen.

For what he contributed, I say "Thanks, Chad."

For the rest, "Buh Bye."

Wonder who the player to be named will be, the Rays always have a deep farm system.

I noticed that the Minnesota Twins acquired four-time All Star Brian Fuentes from the Angels. A closer to be used as their setup man and backup closer.

So the score is Twinkies -- two closers. D'backs -- none. Why?

Fuentes is having a great year but he is 35 years old, not exactly a spring chicken. Besides, he is a FA at the end of the year, if ARZ wants him then they can go after him, I don't believe he will be a Type A FA.

So you want the Dbacks to make a August trade for a soon to be FA?

What I hoped for was a legitimate closer now that Gutierrez has dis-earned it.

Do you guys think there will be a deal before Spring Training?

The Twins are battling for the AL Central title, that is why they traded for Fuentes. Plus he has a sizable option that probably won't be picked up. No use giving up talent now when it wouldn't do anything. We are going to get a closer this off-season. I am hoping for JJ Putz who is currently the set-up man in Chicago but has closing experience.

Seems like we got a good player back for Qualls. Not bad.
From AP
Minor league pitcher Gorgen goes to Arizona
PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired
right-hander Matt Gorgen from Tampa Bay to complete the trade that
sent reliever Chad Qualls to the Rays.
Qualls was traded to Tampa Bay on July 31 for a player to be
named.
Gorgen, a 23-year-old right-hander, was 3-2 with a 1.65 ERA and
tied for the Southern League lead with 22 saves for Class Double-A
Montgomery. He struck out 47 and walked 21 in 42 appearances.
Over three seasons in the Tampa Bay farm system, Gorgen is 11-4
with 54 saves and a 1.45 ERA. Opponents hit .167 against him.
