TAMPA — The Rays have called up hard-throwing right-hander Joe Boyle to start today’s game against the Braves.
There is no indication of any injuries in the rotation. The move, which manager Kevin Cash presumably will explain later this afternoon, could be a way for the team to give their starters an extra day of rest during a homestand with 13 games in 13 days.
Shane Baz, who was scheduled to start today, will likely be pushed back a day.
Boyle, 25, was acquired from the Athletics in an offseason trade involving Jeffrey Springs. Boyle, whose fastball regularly tops 100 mph, was a top 10 prospect in Oakland’s system but struggled at times with his command.
He’s made two starts at Triple-A Durham this season, throwing eight innings with a 2.25 ERA, 10 strikeouts and six walks.
Rays starters have been one of the bright spots in the first two weeks of the season. They are averaging 5.55 innings per start, which ranks fourth in the majors, and their 3.35 ERA is seventh.
Reliever Cole Sulser, who gave up the game-winning, two-run homer in the ninth inning of Saturday’s 5-4 loss to Atlanta, was optioned back to Durham.
This is a developing story that will be updated later today.
