RB Leipzig have fired coach Marco Rose after slipping to sixth in the Bundesliga.

The announcement was made on Sunday following Saturday's 1-0 loss at Borussia Mönchengladbach and comes before Wednesday's German Cup semi-final at VfB Stuttgart.

Former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool icon Jürgen Klopp became head of global soccer at the Red Bull group in January and will have been involved in the decision despite being close to Rose.

Leipzig have qualified for the Champions League for the past six seasons and the threat of missing out has led the board to act with seven games to go in the Bundesliga.

They have won one of their last six league games and were dumped out of the Champions League in January after losing seven and winning just one.

Rose's assistants have also all been relieved of their duties.

"We believed in the setup with Marco and his team for a very long time and tried everything until the end to turn things around together," sporting director Marcel Schäfer said in a statement.

"However, given the developments and the lack of results, we are firmly convinced that we need a new impulse for the remaining matches to achieve our season's goals."

Rose was appointed in September 2022 and had a contract until 2026.

The former Gladbach and Dortmund boss won the German Cup in 2023 with the Red Bulls but is now the third consecutive coach to leave Leipzig prematurely, following Jesse Marsch and Domenico Tedesco. Previously, now Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann left to join Bayern Munich.

At the end of last year, after Leipzig failed to win a single match in November and suffered a 5-1 defeat to Wolfsburg, Rose was already on the brink of dismissal. According to media reports, Klopp argued in his opening days in the job to keep Rose.

Now he has been fired and Leipzig plan to announce in the coming hours and days who will sit on the bench against Stuttgart.

Klopp filling in is unlikely given he has consistently said he wants a break from hands-on coaching.
