Daaaaaaamn. I knew I should have practiced harder and run more laps.
seriously lol. Soccer players are the highest paid athletes outside of golfers, but it's extremely hard to make a name for yourself in european soccer.

Meh. The DBacks have a roster full of Kaka and you don't see them too excited about it.

You so sure about that? David Beckham gets paid over 40 million a year, Lionel Messi gets paid over 30 million, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, and Henry all make well over 20 million... Still sure about that??

Yes. You were able to quote a few players and that money is including any sponsorship earnings. There are plenty of basketball players that earn over $14m not inc sporsors money.

It will drop significantly for football too. Basic salary for a prem football player will be around $1.5m. Not exactly setting the World alight.

Also, just so you know, Manchester United is the richest sports franchise in the world. Although, there are some NFL teams not too far behind. Real Madrid and Arsenal are also included in the top 10 most valuable sports franchises in the world.

£80 million offer accepted for Ronaldo today.

oh lord!
131 million, that's freakin insane. Real Madrid might sign David Villa as well, that would make them extremely hard to beat.

Wow.

I wonder who United is going to get with all that $.
They will probably go after Ibrahimovic from Inter Milan, or maybe Fernando Torres.

How does that help your argument at all? We were talking about players salaries.
It means the players have a higher average pay than those who play in the NFL/NBA/MLB. There are far less players on soccer teams, excluding NBA teams, and they're just as valuable, if not more valuable franchises.

just need another £20m and they could buy newcastle utd to have a coca cola championship feeder club.......or they use Sid James park as a pitch and putt :D

Sunderland goes down? I and others show nothing but class and give them the 'aw shucks' spiel. Newcastle goes down and it's a dogpile.

I would say that it shows that I have more class (I do, in this, as it turns out), but it really boils down to this:

Sunderland getting relegated? Who cares, happens all the time. Newcastle gets relegated? Dang, a big club going down...now THAT'S newsworthy.

Crazier things have happened. Man U will be able to afford whoever they want, no matter what team.
I think Enlish was saying that Liverpool wouldn't sell him to man u because they are rivals for the title. It would be a pretty stupid move. Saying that, Liverpool do seem to need some money right now.

The rumours seem to be man u going after Ribery, Benzema and Villa.

No it doesn't. Im sorry, but the Premiership is probably th highest paying league in the footballing world (for average salary) and the average in the Prem isn't anywhere near the NBA. There are only the top top stars that get paid more than $75k per week. The AVERAGE NBA salary is $5.2m a year.

Ribery is probably one of the best mid-fielders in the game, i think he's the starter on the french international team. David Villa would be a great signing as well. If i were Man U, i would be going after Ibrahimovic, he's a goal scoring machine, and he's almost unstoppable.

Do you have any links/stats on that? I know in america, NBA certainly has the highest average pay, but soccer is the most popular sport in the world. If the NBA does have a higher salary, it's only due to the fact that there are only 13 players on a team, where as football clubs have probably around 25-30 players. I'm sure it would take at least 5 NBA teams to equal the worth for Manchester United though :)

Just check NBA salary cap on wikipedia. Also, you have just made my point for me. We were debating who gets paid more as an individual. What does it matter if a footie team pays more in total salary to all its players? Look at Everton for example. Just outside the top four in the Prem. If you can find me more than five players on that team that get paid more than $3m per year i'd be surprised. Here are some details of prem teams wages for (it's for 07-8).
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jun/03/english-premier-league-debt

If you look past the top four then most teams are paying about $70m for all wages. Thats about the same as an NBA team, and there are far less basketball players as you have said.

C.Ronaldo just signed the biggest deal in football history today (by quite a margin) and even that was beaten by four baseball contracts.
