WORCESTER — Is that a bird? Is that a plane?
No, that’s a ball hit by Roman Anthony.
And the Red Sox prospect is currently tearing the cover off it.
On April 17, the WooSox player hit two home runs and collected five RBI in the opening game of his team’s doubleheader with the host Rochester Red Wings. Anthony’s first homer, a 410-foot leadoff blast, reached 107.9 MPH.
As for his second dinger? It marked the 20-year-old’s first career grand slam in professional baseball.
In 66 at-bats so far this spring, Anthony is hitting .273 with 4 HR, 12 RBI and a .945 OPS. The No. 2 prospect in baseball, according to Baseball America, is currently dealing with right shoulder soreness — but the minor injury isn’t stopping him from barreling up baseballs as the WooSox’ designated hitter.
With many on social media calling for Boston’s top prospect to be called up to the big leagues, Anthony returns to Polar Park on April 22 when Triple-A Worcester opens a six-game homestand with the Syracuse Mets.
Joining Anthony in the Canal District will be pitcher Hunter Dobbins.
The 25-year-old right-hander made his second big league start with the Red Sox on April 18. Dobbins filled in for former WooSox pitcher Richard Fitts (who was placed on the injured list with a mild pectoral strain) in Boston’s starting rotation and allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits across six innings in the Red Sox’ 10-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.
In two starts with the Red Sox this season, Dobbins possesses a 2-0 record and 2.45 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 11 innings.
With Worcester’s starting rotation still to be determined for most of the week, beyond Cooper Criswell (April 22) and Robert Stock (April 23), Dobbins’ next appearance remains in limbo — a feeling he’s getting used to as he bounces from Boston to Worcester.
“I don’t think I’ve had really a week where I’ve had a normal routine yet, but I think that’s going to benefit me in the long run,” Dobbins told reporters in Boston after his last start. “If the big-league club needs me to keep making starts, obviously, I’m going to be here ready to go. Coming out of the bullpen down in Worcester, we’ll start learning how to do that again. It just kind of opens up that opportunity where, if late in the season comes around and (the Red Sox) need me out of the bullpen, I’m going to be prepared for it.”
