BOSTON — The Red Sox signed veteran starting pitcher Lucas Giolito to a two-year, $38.5 million contract in December 2023.

Approximately 16 months later, he’s set to make his first start for Boston.

Manager Alex Cora said Giolito (left hamstring strain) will make one more rehab start.

“And then the plan is for him to rejoin us next week,” Cora said Tuesday at Fenway Park.

Giolito — who missed the 2024 season after he underwent an internal brace procedure to repair the damaged elbow in spring training — made a rehab start for Double-A Portland on Sunday. The Red Sox have not yet decided which day he’ll make his final rehab start but either Friday or Saturday for Triple-A Worcester seems likely.

The Red Sox play in Toronto against the Blue Jays next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. They then return to Boston for a series against the Twins May 2-4. So he’s likely to debut for Boston during that stretch of games.

The 30-year-old has made two rehab starts for Worcester and two rehab starts for Double-A Portland so far. He has allowed seven runs, 15 hits and seven walks while striking out 13 in 12 ⅔ innings in the four starts combined.

Giolito said Monday, “I feel ready to go. Finally hitting the five-inning mark was good so I feel ready to help contribute in whatever way possible.”

Other Red Sox injury news:

~ Kutter Crawford (right patellar tendinopathy) threw a bullpen here Tuesday and will travel to Fort Myers on Thursday.

“At this point, it’s better for him to be down there and get his work in and face hitters,” Cora said.

~ Catcher Connor Wong (pinky fracture) caught Crawford’s bullpen — and also swung the bat.

“Swinging a little bit,” Cora said. “I think that’s the big step today. So hopefully we can speed up the process and he’ll be with us sooner rather than later.”
