BOSTON — When catcher Connor Wong went down with a broken left pinky finger earlier this month, the Red Sox indicated he would return relatively quickly.
Now, that seems like that’s about to become a reality.
Wong, who was injured on April 7, is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend, with the potential to rejoin the parent club on Tuesday in Toronto.
“He’s feeling OK. Most likely he’ll go on a rehab assignment on Sunday,” said Alex Cora. “How many (games he’ll need), we’re not sure yet. I’ve got to talk to him, talk to the hitting group, see how we feel. The catching part of it, he’s actually catching Tanner (Houck in a between-start bullpen session) right now. He’s passed that (test), so he should be fine.
“It’s just the hitting, and see what’s good for him and make a decision.”
The Red Sox are off Monday before starting a three-game series in Toronto Tuesday. Asked if Wong could rejoin the parent club for the start of that series, Cora responded: “There’s a chance, yeah.”
In Wong’s absence, the Red Sox have mostly gone with Carlos Narvaez, who hasn’t hit much (.203/.266/.322), but has earned praise for his handling of the pitching staff and his overall defensive work.
Blake Sabol is the team’s current backup, but he would be optioned to Worcester upon Wong’s return.
One other possibility for the Red Sox is veteran catcher Yasmani Grandal, who was signed to a minor league deal and has appeared in four games with the WooSox.
Grandal has an opt-out in his deal for May 1, so the Red Sox may have to make a decision on him sooner rather than later.
