Regal Cinemas Institutes Bag Checks After Theater Attacks

http://variety.com/2015/film/news/regal-cinemas-bag-checks-theater-attacks-1201573858/

Regal Cinemas has started checking bags in the wake of two separate movie theater attacks this summer.

The move from the country’s largest theater chain comes amid a larger debate about safety measures that has provoked calls for metal detectors and armed guards. Most major exhibitors haven’t followed suit. While National Amusements has banned backpacks in its theaters, insiders say most chains are hesitant to institute bag checks.

On its website, Regal acknowledged that the move could inconvenience some customers but said in a statement: “Security issues have become a daily part of our lives in America. Regal Entertainment Group wants our customers and staff to feel comfortable and safe when visiting or working in our theatres.”

Other chains didn’t expound upon their practices. A spokesman for AMC declined to comment on its security procedures, and a spokeswoman for Cinemark said the chain had no comment. A spokeswoman for Carmike said the company constantly reviews its safety procedures, but has not instituted bag checks at this time.

The move by Regal is a sign that the exhibition industry is concerned that more measures may be needed to insure that more attacks like the ones that took place this summer don’t become commonplace. The movie business was stunned after a gunman killed two patrons and himself during a showing of “Trainwreck” in Lafayette, La. last July. That attack was followed a week later by a separate incident in Nashville, Tenn., during which a hatchet- and pellet gun-wielding man unleashed pepper spray in a showing of “Mad Max: Fury Road.” He was later killed by police.

Can't really blame Regal for this. What is the most disheartening is their statement, "Security issues have become a daily part of our lives in America." That kind of says it all right there.

I went to see a movie at a Cinemark theater the other night, and some dude came in with a big backpack and sat behind us. I did wonder for a few moments, in light of these shootings, whether this was a concern. I don't think its a big deal to ban backpacks and I wish all the theaters would do it.

Totally agree. I am always leery of other people in the theater as well. Pretty sad we have to worry about this

This. I mean despite all the rhetoric that we can't let terrorism or psychos with guns or gun nuts for that matter parading through Walmart change our lives. It has.

It's changed the way we look at foreigners. It's changed the way we fly. It's changed the way the government implements the justice system. It's changed the way the government treats it's citizens. It's change the tolerance level in this country. It's caused mass paranoia to the point that we call the person in the most respected elected position in this country a Muslim. The reason I bring up all this stuff is because I think it represents the overall impact of mass acts of violence have had on our society in general. It all impacts to the overall feeling of safety in America by the average citizen.

It's really sad because as a kid I would have never thought twice about danger in a movie theater. Now my kids are growing up with drills in schools for shooters being the norm. You can't even get into Disneyland anymore without bag checks. Tons of airport security being the norm. I don't see an end in sight. It's sad but I imagine a day when having things like metal detectors and bag checks is the new normal in public places like the movie theater.

What's next? In many ways, acts of terrorism (foreign or domestic) are winning the war on changing our everyday lives. Can't we just enjoy a night out at the movies without the fear of some mentally deranged idiot or other killing us?

This has nothing to do with guns and everything to do with scanning womens purses for contraband snacks that they smuggle in.

You know... You're joking but I'm willing to bet they discussed this at length as an added benefit. They probably already have predictions of how much their concession stands sales will increase.

They have been going this for a few weeks up here in Portland and I was with someone who had candy in her purse. They saw the candy and said nothing, but to be fair, all the Regal's up here have consessions before you give them your ticket so the hard to prove where the candy came from.

I do feel bad for the person checking, they were being given a lot fo grief over it.

Is everything

I never buy candy or beverages, only popcorn if desired. Cinemas have priced themselves out of making sales. When you practically have to take out a loan to buy a box of sno-caps and a beverage, it's a no brainer to just smuggle the goods instead.

We only attend Harkins theaters here. Basically, you buy a souvenir cup and get $1 dollar refills for the rest of the year. We buy the extra large bag every other movie and refills are $1. Since we bought the t-shirt, you get a free popcorn that you can upgrade to the large so even that is at a discount.

I know not everyone has Harkins Theaters but they are very reasonable with everything except the candy. Which is why we purchase outside.

I disagree with this, though I think it's fine to search everything. Some people have medical supplies, come straight from work or the gym, etc. Chasing away business isn't necessary, although you'll lose some small bit due to the searches.

I would think coming from work or the gym, you could leave your bag in the car.

Medical supplies is different but that would be an easy exception to make.

Also could put up lockers

This is outrageous! Last time I checked, this was 'Merica and I could carry my AR-15 anywhere I wanted! I remember a time when I could leave a hunting rifle on my gun rack in my high school parking lot. Hell, I brought a live grenade for show-and-tell and no one cared. I could carry a sidearm to a baseball game and no one would bat an eyelash. I could go to government buildings, which my tax dollars pay for by the way, without fear of liberal metal detectors.

What happened to the good old days when we could take guns onto Transatlantic flights so that we could hunt endangers species into extinction, as is our God-given right? Now you can't even smoke in, or tamper with smoke detectors on, a plane.

Or, remember when you could shoot your gun off in the air at weddings or on New Years? All these wonderful memories have been stomped out by federal goons!

I tolerated all that because at least I still had the movies. If the MPAA has taught us anything, its that fatal shootings are only a PG-13 offense, so long as no boobies or dirty language accompany the kill. But now Regal Cinemas is taking away my Second Amendment right. Have they not read the Constitution?

If we keep going like this, we're gonna end up like Australia, which confiscated all the firearms from legal owners. Now, only criminals have guns down under, and banditos roam the streets of Sydney with impunity!

Mark my words, folks, Regal Cinemas is just a shadow arm of the Hussein Obama Administration. If we don't push back now, this is only the beginning!

I'll end my rant here. I've got a neighborhood watch meeting to attend.
