It appears that Tom Willander will not be joining the Abbotsford Canucks for the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs. According to a report by "Donnie and Dhali," Rick Dhaliwal, the 20-year-old defenceman is headed to Sweden to join the national team ahead of the 2025 IIHF World Championship. Willander recently finished up his second season at Boston University, where he helped the Terriers make it all the way to the final.

The report by Dhaliwal is significant as it most likely means Willander will not participate in the upcoming AHL playoffs. It also shows that the Canucks and Willander's camp are still struggling to come to an agreement on an entry-level contract. As per Thomas Drance of "The Athletic", one of the major roadblocks has to do with Schedule A bonuses, which can be added to an entry-level contract.
After two seasons in the NCAA, it is clear that Willander is ready to turn pro. The 11th overall pick from 2023 has 49 points in 77 games in the NCAA, and played over 23 minutes in this year's final. Willander is also one of Vancouver's top prospects, with the right-shot defender expected to push for a roster spot in 2025-26.
The 2025 IIHF World Championship, which will start on May 9, will take place in Stockholm, Sweden, and Herning, Denmark. Sweden will kick off their tournament on the ninth, with a game against Slovakia. The tournament can be viewed on TSN.
