New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has made some mistakes at the trade deadline and history repeated itself in 2024.

In 2023, Schoen failed to deal running back Saquon Barkley only to lose him to the Philadelphia Eagles the following offseason. He could have also traded safety Xavier McKinney that year but didn't, losing him to the Green Bay Packers instead.

Rewind to the 2024 trade deadline and ESPN's Jordan Raanan reports the Giants had an offer for linebacker Azeez Ojulari -- a fifth-round pick -- but Schoen failed to pull the trigger because Kayvon Thibodeaux was injured at the time.

Ojulari, like Barkley before him, is now a member of the Eagles and the Giants got nothing.

The Giants were 2-7 at the trade deadline. Heard at the time a fifth-round pick was offered for Azeez Ojulari.

But Kayvon Thibodeaux was injured at the time. Ojulari starting. Giants decided to keep him.

A fifth-round pick may not seem like much on the surface, but Schoen has made some of those count in recent years. He drafted running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. in 2024 and linebacker Micah McFadden in 2022.

Not all of the blame can be placed on Schoen, However. At the annual League Meetings in Florida last March, Giants co-owner John Mara sounded off on trading players at the deadline.

“I hate trading guys right at the trade deadline," Mara said, via the Bergen Record. "Because it almost signals that you’re giving up on the season."

In the end, it doesn't matter if it's the Giants' philosophy coming from the top or a decision made by Schoen, it was the wrong one and it hurt the team. Again.
