New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton III was traded to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, and now we might have an explanation for the reason why.

According to Mass Live's Mark Daniels and Karen Guregian, Milton reportedly wanted out of New England for a better shot at competing for a starting quarterback job.

Daniels and Guregian wrote:

"This move has been in the making. According to a source, Milton wanted out of New England to have a better chance to compete for a starting job. Considering the Patriots drafted Drake Maye at No. 3 overall and then signed veteran back Josh Dobbs to a 2-year, $8 million deal, it didn’t seem like the young quarterback would get that chance in New England."

The Patriots drafted Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft.

He played in one game for the team last season during the finale against the Buffalo Bills. The former University of Tennessee standout went 22-of-29 passing for 241 yards and one touchdown.

With Milton now gone, the Patriots' quarterback room is down to Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs. This trade will be one to revisit in the future given the varying opinions on the move.
