Bale and Zahn Board Rescue Dawn

Christian Bale (Batman Begins) and Steve Zahn (Sahara) are set to star in Werner Herzog's Rescue Dawn, an action-drama based on the German auteur's acclaimed 1977 documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly. Variety says filming is set to begin next month in Thailand.

The independent film tells the real-life story of U.S. fighter pilot Dieter Dengler, a German-American shot down and captured in Laos during the Vietnam War. Dengler, to be played by Bale, organized a death-defying escape for a small band of POWs, including Duane Martin (Zahn).

Rescue Dawn marks the first time Herzog has directed a feature since 2001's Invincible. In addition to "Rescue," he's also on board to helm an untitled soccer feature. His new documentary, Grizzly Man, will be released on August 12th.

This was a fantastic movie, highly recommended, in my top 3 this year.

Christian Bale was great, the story was tense and thrilling...and knowing it was a true story made it all better.

Excellent film!

Good to hear. I meant to see it last night Sunday, but I slept through the early showing and had stuff to do in the afternoon. I'll plan on seeing it (and the Bourne Ultimatum) this weekend.

I rented this over the weekend.

Good movie. Worth the rental.

But it just seemed to be missing something as a film.

Bale and Zahn were excellent, Jeremy Davies did the best job IMO. I don't know if it was the content or the flow of the story but something just wasn't right about the film.

To add to that other thread, Bale, IMO, is the best male actor right now.

I think it was a flow, it seemed to jump quickly a few times and the caused the flow to be a little off.

Recently watched it. It's amazing how Bale can transform his body for different roles. I really liked this one. I bet the cinematography looked awesome on the big screen.

After the movie was over it mentioned that Dengler survived 4 more plane crashes. I guess he wasn't much of a pilot. :D
