Interesting article about these two trades on AZSports. They are worth a read right now and a bit of a discussion.

http://arizonasports.com/story/1503...ledsoe-goran-dragic-looking-better-with-time/

The return from the Bledsoe deal, on the other hand, is much more cut and dry.

A player the Suns surely had no interest in re-signing after the 2018-19 season likely had mutual feelings.

Like Dragic, the Bucks were hoping to see some of that 2013-14 magic that made Bledsoe look like a future All-Star before his serious knee injury with the Suns. He was one of the best defensive point guards in the league, and a fearsome scorer and attacker of the rim.

The mystery and enigma with Bledsoe in the NBA essentially cut down to this: On a winning team, do those floating performances when his aggression disappears and he plays awful defense go away for the most part?

The answer, as the man who Bledsoe can not name — Terry Rozier — knows better than anybody, is “no.”

Even in the NBA Playoffs, Bledsoe played that frustrating brand of basketball.

While he did have a stretch during the season where he seemed to figure it out, the Bucks didn’t trade for him to have just a stretch.

Show up when Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton need you in the playoffs.

Show up when, oh, I don’t know, those two guys shoot a combined 23-for-31 in Boston in Game 2 and they just need something from you.

The pick the Suns get from the Bledsoe deal will be worthless next season when the Bucks have a better HC in place.

Whoever decided to add the back-end protection on that draft pick for this season (and McD confirmed it was the Suns who wanted that) should be fired immediately.

There’s less than a .001% chance the Bucks pick will be better than #17 which is what it was this season.

Looks like they had no interest in resigning Bledsoe, according to this article. So the real prize in that trade was the $15 million in extra cap money this summer. They traded Bledsoe for $15 million and a first round pick.

The Bledoe trade could resemble the IT trade resulting in late first round picks.

Even late first round picks have trade value.

I don't mind the back end protection but surely the Suns weren't the only ones who decided where that backend protection would kick in. It's also #17-30 next year, so there is a chance it's better. If Giannis goes down with an injury all bets are off in Milwaukee. Besides Giannis getting injured there is a chance he demands a trade. He did try to save Kidd's job but that didn't pan out. if they bring in a new head coach that he butts heads with things could get interesting. It's far too soon to say that pick is worthless and the backend protection is one of the main reasons it's worthless.

Since we have the Heat pick this year there wasn't much need to add a 2nd mid 1st round pick. Yes, that would have helped in a trade but having 3 1st round picks puts you in a tough position to negotiate a deal because every other team in the league knows it's unlikely you're going to hang onto all of them, especially with how the Suns roster looks right now. They don't have room for 3 1st round picks.

As I have said before, the Suns first pick in the second round is very close to first round value as well.

I have to admit I would have liked the Bucks pick to convey in this draft as I believe it would have more trade value.

The #16 pick would typically have more trade value but I think other teams would try to lowball the Suns since they're not in position to add 3 1st round picks. That happened back in 2014 when they had 3 1st's also. They didn't intend on using all 3 on players for that following season then and they ended up not being able to deal one of their picks or move up with them. They had to stash a Euro with one, Bogdan. So it's questionable right now in regards to how much value it would have had if it conveyed this year. We'll figure that out when it conveys.

I'd argue that it may be MORE valuable than a pick near the end of the first round because salary is not guaranteed.

As for the Bucks' pick... I am OK with how it turned out. This team is full of youngsters, and it will be nice to have some extra picks in a year or two or three.

Forward thinking. If this team is decent in a year or two, the Suns can target a role player to fill out the roster. Plus with the way the NBA is, maybe the Bucks blow up the team in a few years and the pick is better.

You may well be right. I was looking at it from the perspective of the Suns trying to trade for another top ten pick. A couple of mid first round picks might have got them there or very close.

But they still have those picks. I agree, it would have been nice to try and move up back into top ten, but it's not like they lost the pick. They still have it, just not this year.

This is true about not having to guarantee the salary of a second round pick but I think whoever is drafted at #31 will have some guaranteed money thrown at him.

I do like the idea of having future first round picks. I enjoy counting them like gold coins. :p

Ideally the Bucks will be awful and get screwed by the lottery, pushing their pick to #4 or worse. It's only protected #1-3 next year at the top and #17-30 at the bottom of the round. So there is potential it gets much better than what it might have been this year.

But it's more likely the Bucks pick loses value going forward but who knows what can happen.

There is the matter of Giannis Antetokounmpo.

However, perhaps Bledsoe throws them a curve ball. :wink2:

If this were true, you'd see teams at the end of the first round voluntarily trading down to the early second round. Which does not happen. The amount of guaranteed money for a late first-round pick is trivial.

Yup. This just seems like people contorting to defend the FO again.

The first round pick guarantees the team has control over its pick for five years whereas they can get Boozer’d with 2nd round picks and lose then for Nada after three years.
