Jason Richardson wants a contract extension from the Suns.

Richardson is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

"I'd love to get something done (with my contract), get it out of the way, so I don't have to do that this summer. That's my hope," Richardson told FanHouse Thursday night.

"But nothing serious is being talked about at this point. A contract year can be a distraction, so I'd rather avoid that and just get something done."

Richardson is in the final year of a contract paying him $14 million this season.

It makes sense for J-Rich to want an extension at this point, but it doesn't make much sense from the Suns' perspective. I don't believe that Richardson will play in Phoenix beyond this season. I don't think the Suns have any intentions of extending him or re-signing him next summer. This is primarily because I doubt the Suns paid Childress $6.5M/year to continue to come off the bench.

I'd keep him around for less than $10 million. I'd say $8 million would be the right price. Other than that, he's more valuable as a trading piece, so if we can't get a contract for $8 million (or so) done by February, let some other team deal with it from there and get a better piece to rebuild with....

I like Richardson, and he has been the Suns' second best player since the start of last year's playoffs. But, unfortunately, for a soon-to-be rebuilding team with a surplus of wings, keeping him around for a big salary doesn't make much sense. I will wish him well, but I don't see him staying in Phoenix.

You dont think JChill can actually replace JRich, do you?
I like Childress but he has no outside shot, he is not big enough be a real low post threat and JRich although older still has more hops than him.

What is the point if we get a big and there is no real threat on the perimeter. JRich and Amare were huge in the Suns getting to the WCF last season. You collapse on Amare and JRich makes you pay, so unless we are getting a real good big or another good jump shooter, then you have only Nash since Turkoglu is useless.

If we can get a good big for JRich (big if), even a half decent one then we should just do it and worry about finding a replacement shooter later. We can get a shooter that is younger and for cheaper money this offseason (or even during this season perhaps) without much effort, as they are a dime a dozen. I like JRich but we should be looking to the future now so locking him up for 8m a year with all the wings we already have doesn't make much sense to me.

He deserves an extension, but for me (playing the role of an armchair GM for the SUNS) he doesn't get one here.

There may be only three players on this current roster that i'd go forward with.
Dragic, Dudley and Childress.
Lopez a "maybe."

I'd add Warrick to that list. He's a nice tweener backup and he's priced reasonably for that role. It's not his fault we need him to be a starting caliber power forward. That gives us 4.5 decent second team players. Now all we have to do is find a first team for our future.

The last time Richardson was traded for a big, the big was Brandan Wright :(

I believe that Dragic can be an effective starter on a team that plays with a different philosophy than whats in place here.
Having said that, I would love to see Goran play 30+ minutes as the starter here for a lengthy stretch of games and see how he responds.

I think the verdict is still out on Goran. I really can't tell whether he's a budding star or just a very good backup. And until we see him in a more traditional offense we may never know for sure. Even now, I'd rather we start him and begin to play to his strengths and let Nash come in and run his uptempo offense for 20 - 25 minutes a game.

I think Dudley, Childress and maybe even Warrick could also be starters if they were playing alongside someone like David Robinson or Tim Duncan. It's amazing how much better these kind of players look when they have a quality big man back there to bail them out on offense and defense.

Whenever the Suns try to trade a "little" for a big, it fails miserably.

J-Rich talks like he wants a new contract with the Suns but plays like he's about to retire.

Trouble is, how else are we going to aquire a big when our existing roster is made up almost entirely of "littles". Pray we get a #1 pick in the same year that a Hakeem/Duncan/Robinson is available? We won't have any free agent money for the next few years at least.

JRich was a good acquisition and he has been among the top SG in the league while he has been here. He fit for what the Suns were trying to do. However, if you are the Suns and you are not going to pull off a blockbuster trade, I don't see why you sign him? Your not going to win a title anytime soon (barring a blockbuster trade). However, maybe he just wants to finish his career with an organization he likes (a la Steve Nash)? If he asks for a reasonable contract I would be OK with it. You need a good mix of veterans anyway even on a young team. If he wants his market value though???? You let him walk or trade him now.

i am surprised how inconsistent JRich is, game to game, especially playing alongside Nash or Dragic (who had 10 assists covering for Steve in our last game), as well as two Point Forwards, Hedo and Grant Hill.

The two wing positions should be a piece of cake every game for our 2-Guard with the assist potential with the aforementioned players.

His shooting can be erratic but name me one shooter that isn't? JRich was the pretty damn consistent last year and this year he is looking good as well. He has scored at least 10 points or more in every single game this year but 3. He has scored 20+ 11 times already this season.

I agree that sometimes he doesn't hit the shot when we need it but I think he is top 5 or something in scoring from the SG position or something like that? I am not sure how more consistent he can be without becoming Kobe Bryant and being the featured scorer on our team.

DJ for Robey being the biggest example, of course. That wasn't a trade. That was a gift.

Hot Rod Williams too.

One of the best bigs we ever had was James Edwards. I know it was the drug scandal and all, but I cannot figure why it was necessary to trade away one of the decent true bigs in Suns history.

Hill is an overrated playmaker.

Edwards was a true Center on defense and shot from the outside on offense.

You are right. We would have thought that he would satisfy the Suns history of having a fairly light (225 lb.) 7'0" Center locate 20 feet from the basket.

Why was Edwards traded? I don't remember him being given the clear chance to be our main Center playing alongside Alvan Adams from '82 to '88. Adams put up a lot of stats for the Suns through longevity, but was not a presence in the middle.

'Not too different than any Center having to battle now with Frye for playing time because of the contract investment the Suns have made in him.

Things change and things stay the same. Especially for the Suns in the post.

We could try getting the #9 pick and hope a young high school stud drops to us.
