Coach Rick Pitino and the No. 2 seed St. John's Red Storm couldn't get it done in the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, falling in the second round.
Although many St. John's fans may have seen this season as a success, other programs that had early tournament exits had the exact opposite view.
Following an 86-80 loss to the Xavier Mountaineers in the First Four, the Texas Longhorns elected to move on from coach Rodney Terry. They replaced him immediately with the very same coach that ended their season, Sean Miller.
Now Xavier, coming off a first-round exit of its own, was in need of a new coach. And they went with Pitino's son, bringing the father-son duo to the Big East.
On Tuesday, CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein reported that New Mexico Aztecs head coach Richard Pitino will become the new coach of Xavier.
"Sources: Xavier will hire New Mexico's Richard Pitino as its next head basketball coach," Rothstein wrote on X.
After being an assistant coach for numerous years, Richard Pitino started his head coaching career as an associate under his father at Louisville in 2011. He went on to spend a season at FIU before joining Minnesota in 2013. Richard Pitino led the Golden Gophers to just two NCAA Tournament appearances in eight seasons, leading to his firing in 2021.
Shortly after, Richard Pitino became the 22nd head coach of New Mexico. He struggled in his first season (2021-22), ending with a 13-19 record. After a better second year, Richard Pitino went on to lead the Lobos to two straight NCAA Tournaments.
