CLEVELAND — Just a day after his second-seeded St. John's men's basketball team lost 75-66 to 10th-seeded Arkansas, coach Rick Pitino was back in a basketball arena.
This time it was to watch his son and New Mexico coach Richard Pitino take on second-seeded Michigan State at Rocket Arena.
The two-time national champion and basketball Hall of Famer had front row seats behind media row directly across from the Lobos bench where his son marched up and down the floor.
Tenth-seeded New Mexico, which led 31-29 at halftime, was hoping to reach the Sweet 16 for third time in school history and first time since 1974.
Pitino led the Red Storm to a 31-5 record and a Big East title — the program's first since 1992 — before St. John's lost to the Razorbacks in a second-round game Saturday.
