Steve Irwin killed in stingray attack
By 7News Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has been killed in a stingray attack near Cairns on Australia's far north coast.

It was believed Irwin had been swimming off the coast of Cairns when he was stung.

"It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest," Brisbane's Courier Mail reported this afternoon.

Irwin was best known for his documentary series "The Crocodile Hunter".

He was born in Victoria and found his love of animals after following in his father's footsteps, volunteering his services to the Queensland Government's East Coast Crocodile Management program.

He spent years living on his own in the mosquito infested creeks, rivers and mangroves of North Queensland, catching huge crocodiles single-handed.

In June 1992, he married American Terri Raines after they met when she visited Irwin's Australia Zoo.

The 44-year-old is survived by his wife and two children, Bindi and Robert.

In my mind that guy was invincible, he could wrestle with gators and wrangle deadly snakes and he might get knocked down but he always got back up.

Sad because he had two little kids at home :(

VEry wierd considering stingrays are friendly animals from what I thought. You could always put your hands in and pet them at sea world. They also have expedition to go swim with them and around them in the ocean. The key is to just drag your feet so you dont step on them. SAD!

What are the odds of the bard going through his chest and stabbing him in the heart? Very sad news. I feel very bad for his wife and two kids.

I went and read his bio over at IMDB and thought this was interesting:

He tells his camera crew to always be filming. If he needs help, he will ask for it. Even if he is eaten by a shark or croc, the main thing he wants is that it be filmed. If he died, he would be sad if no one got it on tape.

I hope the video gets out. I think that's what he would want. I was mad when they didn't play the audio of the crazy grizzly bear guy getting eaten.

I think I was more shocked and bummed out about Steve's death than I have been in a long time. What does that say about me

Another thing that upsets me about this whole chain of events is that Paul Hogan now regains his seat as the #1 stereotypical Aussie celebrity. I wonder if he's dusting off the script for Dundee 4?
