Gene Mauch succumbed to cancer today at the age of 79. Gene will most likely be remembered as the guy who never managed a team to a World Series.

His Phillies team choked a big lead with over a week to go and who could forget the 1986 ALCS against the Red Sox. The Angels were one strike away from advancing to their first ever World Series and Dave Henderson went deep on Donnie Moore in game five. Moore committed suicide a few years later. He could never get over giving up the homer to Henderson. I wonder how Mauch lived with that collapse?

Ilived in Philly in 1964

Mauch had only 3 starters he could count on and only one good relief pitcher. They were arm weary down the stretch and just ran out of gas. I'll always remember the 1964 season because the Phillies were told to print and sell World Series tix and we had some for 2 games. Alas the Phils lost 10 straight and I was devastated. My Dad seeing my devastation got tix to game 2 in Yankee Stadium and I got to see Mickey Mantle win the game in the bottom of the ninth on a homerun. I still have the game program from the game. RIP Gene Mauch. He was one of the best managers ever.

I used to be a huge California Angel fan. Poor Gene was a Dave Henderson bomb away from making the series, that was a heart breaker

RIP Gene Mauch and since I said your name for the first time in years.... RIP Donnie Moore :(

What saddens me is the fact that Mauch will forever be remembered for those two collapses instead of the nearly 2,000 wins he complied as a manager.

RIP Gene.. May you win that Big One yet.
