Leonard Nimoy, who lived long and prospered, died Friday at his Los Angeles home.

The creator of Mr. Spock, television’s most beloved pointy-eared half-Vulcan, was 83 and had suffered for several years from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), which makes it difficult to breathe.

“I quit smoking 30 yrs ago,” he tweeted last week. “Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP.”

“LLAP” was Spock’s best-known catch phrase: Live long and prosper.

Sad.

The thing I remember him most for besides Spock was narration for "In Search Of", a show I loved as a kid.

RIP Mr Spock. When they talk about iconic characters, yours is often the first to draw mention.

No words. just sad. RIP Spock.

I don't know if there's another character/actor who has transcended so many generations like Spock/Nimoy did and the way they did - not just the iconic greeting. Maybe Shatner too, but I always thought of Spock on a different level than Shatner.

Thank you for helping us boldly go where no one had gone before. Growing up on Trek he was by far and away my favorite character in the "verse".

Truly a sad day for Trek fans. R.I.P.

Agreed. A truly sad day for Trek fans. We've lived through the losses of Scotty and Dr. McCoy but this one is big. You lived long and prospered Spock. Now rest in peace. You deserve it.

Really, really sad. :(

The guy had a terrific life and Spock is a permanent part of culture for long time into the future. He was just a classy guy, and so talented. Acting, writing, directing....

I didn't realize Nimoy was also a Jewish advocate for peace with the Palestinians. Ran across this little bit from one of his letters today:

You might recall the episode in the original Star Trek series called, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield." Two men, half black, half white, are the last survivors of their peoples who have been at war with each other for thousands of years, yet the Enterprise crew could find no differences separating these two raging men.

But the antagonists were keenly aware of their differences--one man was white on the right side, the other was black on the right side. And they were prepared to battle to the death to defend the memory of their people who died from the atrocities committed by the other.

The story was a myth, of course, and by invoking it I don't mean to belittle the very real issues that divide Israelis and Palestinians. What I do mean to suggest is that the time for recriminations is over. Assigning blame over all other priorities is self-defeating. Myth can be a snare. The two sides need our help to evade the snare and search for a way to compromise.

One of my all time favorite characters. His memory will live much longer than his physical manifestation. Boldly go, Mr. Nimoy, boldly go.

I wonder how the Big Bang Theory is going to approach this. Sheldon is a huge Spock and Nimoy fan even freaking out when he found out the autographed napkin with Nimoy's DNA(he wiped his mouth with it). They just did the episode touching on Howard's mother dying(very well done BTW) so I'm guessing if they do do something, it won't be anytime soon.
