He's not very comfortable around the media. He never has been. He was critical of how tough the media was here and in Seattle (which I find hillarious)

I don't think he really knew was that he was in for. In AZ and in Seattle the number of writers covering the team rarely reached over 15 (except maybe in the playoffs), in NY there are 65 beat writers that cover the Yankees and that doesn't include the columnists or the radio and TV broadcasters that will be covering the team.

If he expects the media to back down from him like they did for him around here, then he's in trouble. Be careful what you wish for Randy...

He is going to have a meltdown by August. Should be interested in New York this summer with Pedro Martinez and RJ in the NY media spotlight.

The really stupid part was where Letterman kept telling RJ that it was ok for him to behave the way he did. I watch Dave regularly, and from time to time he really misses the boat.... Just like this one (he also missed the boat on the Debacle in Detroit).

What RJ did was pure crap..... Wake up, Doofus!!!! You chose a public life..... no one chose it for you. That cameraman was polite enough. And he was taking pictures for the people who pay your salary.

Actors, pro atheletes, etc. who display such stupid behavior should probably be cheerfully beaten to a pulp (in front of a camera....).

I will give Randy props for his comments on AZ and the D-Backs over the last couple of days, in his NY press conference and on Late Night.

He has repeatedly defended AZ and made a point to say that he and his family will still LIVE here in AZ, and that he will still follow the D-Backs. He has also said he didn't feel he was coming from a losing situation to a winning one...he said that the D-Backs had a plan in place, but injuries hampered them. The NY press has tried to get him to say something negative about AZ and he's killed them with praise for our state/team.

Bri..... RJ was rambling about something to do with Colangelo not meeting his salary commitments..... Did you get what he was talking about?? I mean, JC would have had to honor the contract (if he were still in power....).

Any ideas?

I thought he was saying he had some kind of agreement with JC but the new guys wouldn't honor it.

Here's what I took from it: Randy got his current deal from Jerry Colangelo. Randy is still performing at a high level. New management wanted him to play for less. Randy feels he shouldn't have to play for less since he's still performing at a high level. He said he would take a cut in pay if his performance had dropped off, but that's not the case.

That may be what he said, but somehow it doesn't feel right. They've been talking about trading RJ since mid-2004, so that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

I would suspect that he was looking for a multi-year contract, and at his age and salary, the DBacks were unwilling. Plus, $6 million of his $16 million 2005 contract would have been deferred (with interest) till 2010. The treasury of the Yankees, however.......

Reportedly they wanted to do a Shawn-Green type extension - cut his salary drastically the last two years of an extension, and if that's so, I don't blame RJ one tiny bit for saying Foo. He's a friggin Hall of Famer, and that's insulting, unless they packed it with massive incentives. While I personally doubt he'll hold up at the same high level for 3 more years, you can't respectfully offer him a contract extension predicated on that.

Still penny-wise, pound-foolish.

RJ should thank his lucky stars that the Yankees aren't based in London...better to be penny wise rather than pound foolish.

This article in today's Republic gave some insight into the incident Gil Tyree had with Randy a few year ago.

Chanel 3, who was telecasting D'backs games at the time, sent Gil and a cameraman to Randy's house for an interview.

Randy reacted . . . strongly. And the relationship between Tyree and Johnson has been strained ever since.

It wasn't Gil's fault. He was doing what his station told him to do.

The fault was his boss at Channel 3 who didn't have the cojones to call Randy first and set up an interview.

It was Gil's fault. RJ was living in a gated community. He made a non-authorized entry. This is what po'd RJ.

Now if your boss tells you to enter an area which says no tresspassing do you do it?

You're right. But are you absolving Channel 3 of any of the blame?

Station management should have planned it so Gil would not have been put into that position.

Both of their fault - station management should not have sent them, Tyree should not have gone past security.

A person's house should be their refuge from the media.
