Utility player Robby Hammock was designated for assignment to make room for first baseman Tony Clark on the 40-man roster.

Hammock, 27, caught Randy Johnson's perfect game last May and was one of the "Baby Backs." He batted .282 in his rookie year in 2003.

But Hammock was a victim of the team's improved depth. The Diamondbacks have 10 days to trade him, waive him or send him outright to the minors.

Hammock played in only 62 games last season because of injuries.
Interesting. Guess they couldn't get anybody moved off in trade. Too bad, he has a great smile. Destined to be a trivia question, perhaps.

He's going to help some scrambling club who could use an extremely versatile and clever utility player. And an emergency 3rd string Catcher who's actually a Catcher.

Im a bit surprised, I was expecting Gil or Stockman to be removed, not Hammock, who could have been a servicable bench guy.

Chris Snyder and Koyie Hill are vastly superior to Hammock in my opinion. He was below average with the bat and we saw last year how he handles a young staff not to mention his atrocious defense. There's a reason Joe Jr. was desperate for a backstop last summer and that reason is Hammock will never be a solid everyday MLB catcher. His only hope is to stick somehwere as a utility guy.

Robby's health prohibits him even more. I wonder how he would have turned out if he had the endurance to be an everyday Catcher. We'll never know.

Although about a year ago, I posted a photo of him next to one of Craig Counsell. They looked remarkably similar.

A middle infielder built like a Catcher wouldn't work. In this case, I guess a Catcher built like a middle infielder didn't either.

I agree. Utility infielders are a dime a dozen and very fungible. Catching is the most difficult defensive position.

I'm hoping they have a deal worked out for him, because there are teams that could use catching depth. I'd be shocked if he cleared waivers.

The Rockies might be interested in trading for Hammock. Getting anything at all for him would be a nice little bonus.
