Rochester sophomore Kate Gross somehow threaded the ball inside the near post with under 12 minutes left for the go-ahead goal and Central State Eight Conference win.
The Rockets (9-3, 5-1 CS8) initially grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second half on junior Mary Jane Keller’s assist to senior Taylor Offer.
Offer, the catalyst in the girls basketball team’s Class 3A regional title, leads the team with 12 goals and 12 assists this season. Evan Burke, in his first season at the helm, described Offer as a fourth coach.
“It doesn’t matter who we play, they really know she’s the one on the field, which helps us with all of our other players,” Burke said. “It opens them up a little bit too. She’s invaluable, it’s sad to see her go after this year.”
SHG (6-3, 3-2) was without University of Illinois recruit Ava Hancock due to an ankle injury. Senior Caroline Sheehan roped the game-tying goal on a free kick with under 26 minutes remaining. Gross answered with her second goal of the season on Alaina Stock’s assist.

“We possessed the ball and we built up, but then we got out of what we’re supposed to do through the build-up,” SHG coach Mike Lindsey said. “We need to keep to our game plan and play the way we know how to play. Give them credit, they did a great job: game-planned to sit and counter on us and get in the game in the first half. They had a lot of good chances with their speed.”
