anyone catch the Roenick media interview that was SportCenter yesterday. he had some pretty ridiculous and harsh things to say about the fans.

"If people are going to sit and chastise pro athletes for being cocky, for being suck *****, they need to look at one thing and that's the deal we're going to be signing in about three weeks. Pro athletes are not cocky. Pro athletes care about the game. Everybody out there who calls us spoiled because we play a game ... they can kiss my ***."

just hearing that would make me pretty much not watch any NHL hockey for next season. this was NOT the way to win back the fans of the sport. under any other circumstances i would have been a little peeved...but hearing this after an entire season has been cancelled because of money issues and a CBA has still not been reached just pissed me off.

Get a clue, JR.

Or, better yet, go buy a clue - you spoiled multi-millionaire-crybaby.

He's starting to sound like "Jake" Roenick, not giving a rat's *** and all.

Roenick rips NHL union as labor deal appears near

June 27, 2005
PHILADELPHIA, United States (AFP) - Philadelphia Flyers star center Jeremy Roenick ripped the National Hockey League players union at a weekend charity golf event hosted by Pittsburgh Penguins player-owner Mario Lemieux.

A labor stalemate wiped out the entire 2004-2005 NHL season, with a deal that fell through in February looking better than what the union will have to settle for if they want to reach contract terms in time to have a new season.

"The deal in February beats the (tar) out of the deal we're going to sign in July," Roenick said. "Unfortunately we had to go through a whole year to realize all the (stuff) that was going on and not realize we just had to get a game on the ice.

"And we've hurt our league, we've hurt the reputation of our league and we've hurt the integrity of our league by sticking up for something that might not have been the right thing to do."

The NHL Players Association and owners have come closer to agreeing upon a salary cap level that figures to be around 36 million dollars a club, six million dollars less than the limit discussed four months ago.

"If we would have signed that deal in February, in terms of what we're getting now, we would have looked like heroes," Roenick said. "Right now we look like a bunch of idiots."

At a time when owners and players are wondering how to lure back alienated fans, Roenick told those fans who hold the labor fight against players to stay away.

"Don't come. We don't want you in the rink. We don't want you in the stadium. We don't want you to watch hockey. Period," Roenick said.

"If people are going to sit and chastise professional athletes for making a lot of money... being spoiled and being cocky, they need to look at one thing and that's to look at the deal that we are probably going to end up signing in the next three weeks.

"They better understand that pro athletes are not cocky. Pro athletes care about the game... everybody out there who calls us spoiled because we play a game they can all kiss my (rear)."

Funny how a guy speaks his mind and the truth without resorting to a bunch of butt kissing cliches and people get upset. At least the dude spoke his mind and quite frankly, in alot of ways, he is dead on right. His timing may be off but I think the message is about right. We as fans have to move beyond this whole "they play a GAME" thing and understand it really isn't a game but big business and the players (and owners for that matter) must treat it as such. Once the business is out of the way, then it is more a game.

I guess if you are the ones upset by his statements, then maybe you are the ones he was talking about to begin with?

I kinda agree. I like Roenick and his comments won't keep me from attending any Flyers games once they get back on the ice.

Roenick should wake up every day and thank his lord and the fans that anybody, anywhere cares what his opinion is.
Athletes, actors, politicians, etc,.are privileged people, like it or not, that is reality.
Do I care for a nanosecong that Jeremy Roenick feels he got screwed by what HIS UNION NEGIOTATED.
Give me a break.
Jeremy, get a clue. If the majority of us were laid off for a year we would be living in the street.
If any of us, the working people were given a public forum and told the customers, YES, fans are customers, do not come back, we don't want you. we don't need you. WE would be fired immediately, PERIOD, end of interview.
JEREMY ROENICK YOU CAN KISS MY ASS, YOU SPOILED, PRIVILEGED PIECE Of .........................................................................................

To be fair, it's not the deal that the players negotiated that's a problem. The players are LOCKED OUT. Meaning it's the owners who don't want to have things stay the same.

The problem is "The Cult of Personality".
Players or management, come on. I have no smypathy for either one.
Should I?

No, you shouldn't. But as I was saying to a friend of mine earlier, I really don't think anything Roenick said should change anyone's opinion of what is going on with the NHL right now, that's all.

My opinion of what is going on with the NHL didn't change.
My opinion of Roenick? It absolutely changed!

Roenick on the hockey players: "...we've hurt our league, we've hurt the reputation of our league and we've hurt the integrity of our league by sticking up for something that might not have been the right thing to do."

Roenick to the fans upset with the players: "Don't come. We don't want you in the rink. We don't want you in the stadium. We don't want you to watch hockey. Period."

So, in one breath he admits the players have hurt the league - that it might not have been the right thing to do - and in the next breath he's ripping fans for holding the players partially responsible for the lost season.

The owners and players should have been mature and smart enough to resolve their problems in the off-season. :doi:

Gary Sheffield thinks 99 % of fans are stupid and Roenick wants us to kiss his butt. True love. :sarcasm:
