Unlike any other critic I've ever known or read, Ebert actually MADE a movie and was a student of theater as well as cinema. I respected his opinion and often simply enjoyed reading his prose, whether I cared about his opinion of the movie or not. Early in his career, people seemed to think he was petty, with strong criticism of movies aimed at children, for example. He was actually proved prophetic after the rise of Pixar, in which we all learned there was a higher, reachable standard. Ebert had been right all along. He was what all critics should aspire to.

Bummer. I didn't watch as much after Siskel died, but S&E were an institution for movie reviews. They always reminded me of the old guys in the balcony from the Muppets.

RIP.

Really was a standout along with the late Gene Siskel! The balcony has been officially closed! RIP to these two great men!
