Legions of Roger Federer fans will be reassured by the first bulletin to come out of Switzerland since he underwent knee surgery last month. According to Severin Luthi, who is the Swiss Davis Cup captain and Federer’s long-time assistant, the arthroscopy went smoothly and planning has already started for the 2021 season. “Roger is doing well,” Luthi told the Swiss broadcaster SRF. “Rehabilitation has gone according to plan after the second surgery. No big intensity until now, he will start a physical fitness block with Pierre Paganini [his long-time fitness trainer] shortly. “The first priority is that Roger gets 100 per cent healthy again. The nice thing is that with Roger you still get the feeling you‘re on court with a junior and not with a player who‘s rather at the end of his career, those are perfect conditions we’re focused on next season.” This is the second keyhole surgery that Federer has undergone in 2020. He had the first procedure carried out in February, shortly after his semi-final loss to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open. Then, last month, he unexpectedly announced that the right knee was still bothering him, and that he would repeat the process. Missing a few months’ tennis is hardly as big an issue as it would be in a normal season, as Federer was not keen to play the US Open (which is due to start on August 31) in front of empty stands, and could not be considered a strong contender for the French Open (which is due to start on Sept 27). Having reached the age of 34 without needing a single operation, Federer has now had three minor tweaks on his knees. He had the meniscus on his left knee repaired in 2016, after tearing it while running a bath for his twin daughters.
