Hold onto the ball, Murray!
It looks incredible. Count me in.
Yeah that's tough. I know I liked TFA more than you did even though we shared some of the same issues (another Death Star etc.). However, I wonder if the movie made historical amounts of cash because it was a competent Star Wars compared to the prequels or did fans simply love that film?
What I mean is, if all you have to do is make a competent Star Wars film it will make similar money.
oh... no way this makes similar money. There were a number of factors that made the new Star Wars the phenomenon it was, but the biggest IMO was that it was a continuation of the story everyone was DYING for for 30 years, with ALL of the characters we loved. That plus it being at the very worst competent for pretty much everyone (even the people like me who were entertained but had massive issues with the lack of originality), and beloved by A LOT of people, is what made it soar.
My guess is this likely tops out at 250-300 domestic.

My guess is about 400 to 500 simply because it's Star Wars and you will get some people that were so happy with the other that it carries over a bit to the first anthology film.
Probably more likely to get the people that were disappointed in the re-imagining of A New Hope that will want to see a fresh original film set in the Star Wars universe.

Your last point could be... But I'll be really surprised if it gets that high. It's a Star Wars movie... But it's a Star Wars movie without ANY of the beloved characters from the movies. Will be super interesting to see how it plays.
It's rumored to have Vader and not just a lame cameo. It's one of the most beloved if not the most beloved of all the characters?! I am also assuming that rumor is true but I have no clue. You don't think that has a major impact?
Some... But not in a way that brings in 500 million domestic. Could certainly be wrong.
Yeah maybe but that group is small. You can't earn a billion dollars in box office if the majority of people were disappointed. Especially since it takes a ton of repeat viewings by movie goers to get to that number.
I am an old school Star Wars fan. Old enough to have seen the original Star Wars (1977) when it was first released in theaters. Been obsessed with all things Star Wars ever since.
I saw TFA and enjoyed it. Loved that it was so much better than the prequels, but still have criticisms of the direction they went with the film. I wish it had been much more original rather than a re-telling of the first film with new characters. Seems like lazy writing to me. Still better than the prequels but not even close to the original trilogy, IMHO. It had a chance to be spectacular, fresh, and new and went the easy route instead.
Even with its faults, several friends of mine saw TFA multiple times. Most were younger and seemed caught up in the hype (ala Titanic). Others were just pleased to have something set in the Star Wars universe that was better than the prequels.
This new anthology film looks great and takes us back to a time before the original trilogy. Loved seeing the old school storm troopers, AT-AT's walking in a non-Hoth environment, Emperor's Royal Guard, rebel base, original Death Star, Mon Mothma, possibly Grand Moff Tarkin and Vader, etc. I think this will really interest the diehards from my generation that will not only see it, but likely see it multiple times on the big screen.

Batman V. Superman is likely going to prove the theory above wrong.
How so? It's Domestic take is at 270 million compared to almost a billion domestic?! I won't begin to even talk about foreign market which is a strange bird. However, when the movie was first announced people were expecting much bigger things for that movie domestically since it's one of the most popular story lines in the DC universe.

Ok, color me Star Wars ignorant...who is that and is that the same character?
i think the spectre of Vader will loom over the movie, and he'll be a certain presence, but if you're expecting 30 minutes of hot Vader action, I think you'll be disappointed.
