So far the reviews have been quite positive overall. One I saw said this was the best ever - yeah a stretch.

It was very very well done. JJ Abrams should be embarrassed by what he put out with The Force Awakens compared to Rogue One.

My brother disagrees. He said this is a notch above TFA only in one aspect of the film. He said the TFA has things in it he felt are essential to Star Wars but wouldn't elaborate. He said he couldn't give me more detail without spoiling something. Have no clue what he is talking about until I see it this weekend.

I am referring to the cut and paste job TFA was compared to actually taking a risk. R1 is not a perfect film, but man is it a lot of fun.

If you look back on that thread some of us complained about the "another death star", "another desert planet" and "another Hoth" type stuff in the film before it even came out. However, the film was much bigger than that and one of my favorites even though I agree that I wish it had taken bigger risks.

My brother and I have very similar tastes but he is much more critical of sci-fi because it's not his favorite genre. I am really curious what he was talking about now. LOL. He did specifically tell me TFA simply does some things much better. Again...have no clue what.

I love how this fits right into ANH. Gorgeously filmed. Definitely the best cinematography of any SW film to date.

I have read a bunch of them and a big fan of the Zahn books and some others. Honestly, I thought the mass majority were total and complete crap though. So reading those books for the most part didn't tarnish anything for me and I was glad they were thrown out of cannon for the most part.

I don't disagree. However, considering Luke's son is named Ben in the books, and Han and Leias twins are Jacen and Jaina, where Jacen goes to the dark side and Jaina has to go after him is what really bugs me the most. Kylo and Rey are Jacen and Jaina, but stupidly calling him Ben.

None of that gets to me. I hope some of the concepts "stick". I was thrilled about Star Wars Rebels introducing Thrawn into cannon but obviously not in the Zahn storyline for example.

Me too. Thrawn can be good, but they really haven't done anything with him yet.

I am a huge Star Wars fan that absolutely hated The Force Awakens and really and my doubts about Disney after that movie but Rogue One exceeded all expectations. I loved it.

Agree completely. I was in shock, then saddened, then angry after TFA. All it was to me was a bad fan film with no regard for the saga or mythology. Rogue One fits in perfect and actually adds to A New Hope. I was blown away last night. Love this film.

Dude, what???? I saw it today and it was just barely ok. TFA was way better, and I'd put it just barely above Episode 1 but well below episode 2-7. It would have been cooler if Vader had been played by Hayden Christensen again.

Loved it. L. O. V. E. D. It.

Enjoyed the characters maybe more than TFA. Seemed to stay true to the story.

Vader was perfect as he transitioned to Ep 4.

My only question - in Ep 4 didn't they say all the Bothans died to get the plans? Did I miss something today . . . were there bothans?

Great movie. Dragged a little during the middle but the ending went out with a huge bang! Some good characters some forgettable characters and the soundtrack deviated from Star Wars a little too much for my taste. The last 10 minutes or so was about as epic as there has been in any Star Wars movie.

What is weird though, is there are aspects of TFA that simply worked better for me. Characters were more memorable IMO and there was a sense of fun that was almost completely absent for me in this film. Rogue One almost....almost took itself way too seriously.

The reshoots that were rumored to introduce some humor into the film were sorely needed IMO. Although, the more serious tone was definitely refreshing. The FX (with a couple exceptions were top notch and I loved the new locations.

That scene with Vader at the end was beyond epic. It was simply awesome. The battle scenes were also epic. Once the action kicked in at the end, the ground fighting and the battle in the air it felt like some of the battles from the other films. The final tie in was pretty awesome as well. There were also a tie in to Star Wars rebels. Hara promoted to general from Rebels was "paged" in the hanger, Chopper can be spotted and there was a quick view of the Ghost from rebels in the battle. All very cool stuff for a very very good movie.

It wasn't perfect though. What didn't work for me? They teased some stuff about the Jedi but didn't go into the Jedi stuff enough for me. It was finally an opportunity to see a little bit more (temples) and instead we got a cheap tie in with the crystals IMO. I was also not a big fan at all of the music. It was pretty pedestrian. The one line from Vader about "ambition" was almost George Lucas bad. Last but not least the CGI of Grand Moff Tarkin was a mix of good and not so good. I really wish they had stuck with a couple quick scenes. The more of him they used the worse it got for me. Last but not least..Princess Leia's CGI was god awful. It was like watching a plastic figure from Toy Story. It was really really bad.

Overall it's a must see movie. It is one of my favorites despite some of the issues I had with it. I actually still love TFA, the characters, Solo and so many other things. I love it for different reasons. This was more original for sure and did some stuff much better than TFA. However, it didn't diminish my love for that film at all because I thought that film despite a lack of originality did do some things better in that film.

Going to see it again later this week and I will see how it stands up to a second viewing.

I just thought it was weird that they went with CGI, because it didn't look great. I've seen some Leia impersonators that would totally pass for her on camera. I wonder why they didn't just find someone who looked just like her. They coulda figured out the voice that's easy.

Wow I don't agree about the cgi at all. The first one you raised I hadn't realized was cgi. I was trying to figure out how they located someone that looked that similar. The last one I expected and I expected it to be terrible, and it really wasn't. It worked for me.

My entire family brought it up as soon as we hit the parking lot. The first one worked at first but the more scenes they added the more apparent it became. The second didn't work for any of us even though we all loved the idea. They had a huge task considering how other recent movies handled it. The exact same technique obviously couldn't be used.
