After a year away from football, former Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera is back. Only this time, Rivera is headed back to college as the new general manager for his alma mater, the California Golden Bears.

A two-time NFL Coach of the Year, Rivera was fired in January 2024 after a 26-40-1 record as head coach of the Commanders. Rivera wasn't just Washington's head coach. He also served as the head of football operations. While that wasn't his official title, Rivera hired his own general manager and personnel staff.

Rivera's personnel track record is not good. All four first-round picks from his four years in Washington are no longer on the Commanders' roster. New general manager Adam Peters traded Rivera's 2022 (Jahan Dotson) first-round pick in training camp and released his 2021 (Jamin Davis) and 2023 (Emmanuel Forbes) first-round picks during the 2024 season. Only a handful of Rivera's former draft picks remain on Washington's roster.

Before his time with the Commanders, Rivera was head coach of the Carolina Panthers, where he had a record of 76-63-1. His overall NFL coaching record was 102-103-2, and he had a 3-5 playoff record.

After Washington fired Rivera, he interviewed for multiple defensive coordinator positions. This offseason, Rivera interviewed for the Chicago Bears head coaching position. Rivera spent all nine of his seasons as a player with the Bears.

The general manager position in college is a new role in college sports due to the NCAA transfer portal and NlL. The GM oversees recruiting, off-field events, and player pay and works side-by-side with the head coach. Unlike the NFL, the college GM essentially works for the coach.
