This is why you don't trade Chandler for a handful of magic beans.

I completely agree, especially since he is the only vet we have. He is worth every penny the Suns pay him, and he will be even more valuable as this team figures out how to play and win.

Absolutely. But it would also be helpful if the Suns had Point Guards with the skills to give him accurate passes.

The Suns brass do not know how to evaluate a skilled Point Guard, capable of feeding the rest of the team. Look at Ish.

I give Tyson Chandler a lot of credit for not showing resentment for that.

That's an indictment of the Suns? Ish started in Houston and was soon relegated to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers before being traded to Memphis who waived him so that Golden State could pick him up and shortly thereafter waive him so that Orlando could sign him and then trade him to Milwaukee who then traded him to Phoenix where he lasted for a full season before being waived and then picked up by Houston who waived him fairly quickly which allowed OKC to sign him when they were shorthanded and then they traded him to New Orleans who soon waived him allowing Philadelphia to claim him followed by Washington and then waived again allowing New Orleans to pick him up again before they traded him back to Philadelphia.

All this happened in 5 years. Along the way the guy has gradually improved and is now playing decently. Not great, just decently. I don't see how you can use him to take a shot at the Suns.

If that's not an exaggeration, that is AMAZING.

But was Ish not playing well the season he was with the Suns? Which is what mattered when they decided to waive him. He did OK. And we have no facilitator, which has affected Tyson Chandler's performance, if not all the rest of the roster.

I like Ish Smith better than Ronnie Price at PG but let's face it, a whole list of teams have passed on him as Catlover notes. It's hard to find fault with the Suns decision not to keep him except in hindsight. However, I was surprised they did not re-sign Ish given his age and speed. I did not think Price brought more to the table.

I think Chandler is used to getting maybe one or two more easy baskets off of feeds from the guard but we're not talking about a huge difference here. He only averages around 10 points per game and with us he's been under 6. But he's also averaging more than 3 rebounds fewer per game too and that's not due to poor passing. I think his early season injury had more to do with his horrible play than the guards did. IMO he's just now back to moving and jumping like he would have been if healthy.

As for Ish, no, he did not play all that well for us. He was abused on defense and his lack of an outside shot crippled the offensive flow. But he pushed the pace well and was a good passer and on the rare nights his outside shot was falling he had some value. He's improved that shot a little bit which has increased his value but he's still a poor shooter hence his availability for a mid-season trade back to Philadelphia. He's now in an offense influenced by Mike D'antoni which is probably the best place he could be to hide his defensive shortcomings while taking advantage of his ability to force the tempo.

No. Ish was pretty awful for us. He couldn't hit the broad side of a bard when shooting away from the rim, he couldn't even make free throws, his assist numbers stunk too.

He was only awful on three pt shots - and uncharacteristically so for him. He shot .042 here and every other year he's shot over .300. He was the best playmaker on the team and even had a respectable Asst/TO ratio at 2.8 compared to Bled at 1.7 and Dragic at 2.1. It didn't help him that Jeff was so reluctant to play him. We should have kept him and dumped Hornacek! (I got to yank your chain now and then you know.)

I'm hoping Ishmael can really get Philly going the rest of the season... wouldn't it be something if we could outtank them!

For us, he shot 57% inside 3 feet and under .400 elsewhere. Fortunately he showed discretion and didn't shoot much from outside his range but he frequently stifled the team offense by passing up those open looks. He didn't get a lot of minutes for Jeff but he enjoyed an almost 50% increase in his minutes per game for us than he did with his previous stops at Houston, Memphis, Golden State, Orlando and Milwaukee.

And yes his 3 point percentage was much better elsewhere but for his career he's still shooting just .273 from behind the arc. I loved the way he pushed the tempo and I'd still rather have him than Price. But IMO it's just not accurate to say he played well for us unless you qualify it "as a 3rd string guard" and most of the stats appear to say the same thing. I also seem to recall that he played his best when he was clearly the 3rd string guard behind Bledsoe and Goran or when he entered the game in blowout situations (losing situations). In contested games, where we really needed his help, he tended to struggle.

If you need to rededicate yourself as a fan, there isn't a better reason than what is seen in the "finale" of Rookie/Vet. Both Chandler and Booker reaffirm your love for the Suns, at least it does for me.

http://www.foxsports.com/arizona/story/rookie-vet-devin-booker-and-tyson-chandler-look-back-on-suns-season-050616

Tyson Chandler to Devin Booker:

"The biggest thing in this league is consistency. The players who separate themselves are consistent. They do it every single night."
"Do you want to be legendary, or do you just want to have your moments?"

Yeah. That's what I want to hear a vet player telling Devin Booker. Good stuff. I really want to be a fan of this team.
