excerpt from ESPN article:
Rose told nobody else, except for a bunch of kids in a high school journalism class in December 2002. And, they kept their mouths shut out of -- honest -- respect for the game's all-time hits leader.
An article in Thursday's Los Angeles Times gives the details of Rose's visit to Calabasas High School in California.
Editors of the school paper elected not to out Rose, according to Nick Reder, co-editor of the paper and now a freshman journalism student at Southern California, "out of respect to him because he came in and did a favor for us."
Reder also cited a discrepancy in Rose's statements to the class and the fact that Rose was speaking to the class as a favor to a friend, the parent of the class member.
Reder played a videotape of Rose's visit for The Times. On it, a student asks Rose why he had sacrificed a berth in the Hall of Fame.
Rose replied, "You mean, why did I bet on baseball? Well, it was because I made mistakes. I made mistakes. You know, when you do something, you think you're not going to get caught. It's not like I'm the only guy in the world to gamble."
Seeming to realize that he had admitted to the student that he had bet on baseball, after years of denial, Rose posed a question to a student and took the conversation in the direction of football.
"If you're going to become an alcoholic or drug addict or spousal beater or a gambler, which do you hope to do?" Rose asked.
"Probably gambler," the student said.
"Probably? & Who are you going to hurt by gambling? You don't want to do any of the four. I chose the wrong one in the eyes of baseball," Rose said. "I admitted I bet on football."
Why couldn't Rose have come clean say 10+ years ago? There are times I feel sorry for the bum - then just want to bury him!
