Guard Chris Dishman, cornerback Emmanuel McDaniel and defensive tackle Derrick Ransom have been informed that the team won't offer them new contracts.

All are due to become unrestricted free agents next week.

Also, tender offers will not be extended to the following restricted free agents: cornerback Nijrell Eason, kicker Bill Gramatica, center Jason Starkey, guard Tony Wragge and defensive end Aaron Hunt.

The release of the three offensive linemen caught me by surprise. They provided pretty decent veteran versatility and depth. Logically, rumors like the one about Denny and Wiley being interested in Villarial and other posssible FA linemen sound more and more valid.

Okay, I want to get my "I told you so" in. Dumping much of the O-line doesn't surprise me at all and I don't think Green will stop there. Here's why he did it.

1. You have essentially a rookie QB and you have to protect him, not go with the nonsense that may have permanently ruined Plummer.

2. Green is an offense first coach and he won't tolerate the level of play this line displayed last season or actually the last several years.

3. This draft, despite reports to the contrary, is deep in o-linemen, as is free agency.

4. Green may well stay with the current set of running backs for a year, so they will need decent run blocking, which was rarely provided last season. In fact, it was so bad most of the time you couldn't really evaluate the backs.

5. Finally, there are several under-performers on the o-line. Green is simply sending a "you could be next" message to those guys.

He picked exactly the right place to start with that message. More and more, Green looks like the right selection to at least take this team to the next level.

"Dumping much of the O-line" - what are you talking about? Did I miss something? Did any of last years' 5 scheduled starters get cut?

No, but Big was moved to LG sending Spikes to the bench. And, he's let go of three backups who have been around for years. It's only February, the remaining linemen know they'd better show up ready to play this year.

What I like is that the dumping of Dishman clears a 1m salary that can be applied to an offer for a new starting RG...

I don't see any major surprises with all this.

I'm going to make my first "Dennis Green" prediction.........

Villareal will be signed, probably next week...or very soon after.

He may be our first free agent signing.

I don't think we "cleared" space since Dishman was an UFA anyhow. But, I believe you are correct about signing a new RG. I think we get Villareal pretty quickly, even by this time next week.

I dont think I saw Green say once that Wakefield was going to be the starter in that article. The only thing I saw was the writer making an assumption. Anyways I wouldnt read to much into it.

Plus you are correct Dishman wont save us anything he is a UFA.

Concerning our oline that gives us last year starters and just Wells and Garcia to work. If we go out and get Villareal, that gives us to backup gaurds in Spikes and Wells(oline coach said yesterday he wants to try Wells at gaurd) and a center backup.

So IMO we will be targeting a OT in the early rounds of draft to push for Clements job or we will go out and get a middle teir RT in FA.

Am I missing anyone here?

Shelton-LT
Big- LG
Kendell-C
RG (Villareal?)
RT-Clement

Roundtree
Spikes
Grace was assigned to NFL Europe, so he will at least be in training camp, and I'd guess have a decent shot at staying on the roster.
Garcia? I think he's still on the roster isn't he?

Even if Villareal signs, that still means some more bodies are needed on the OL.....t'will be interesting to see what happens there in that respect.

I forgot about Roundtree. and Grace(although I think the europe league is the kiss of death).

So that means we are set for depth at the G and C spots but none at the OT spot.

Wells was drafted as OT project and Roundtree has played RT.

Wylie was hinting at Wells being moved to G in an effort to slow things down a little bit for him. Not saying he will not end up an OT but it sounds to me like Wylie is envisioning him at G short-term.

We have both Reggie Wells and Kendrick Rogers, rookie tackles from last year, on the roster.

And Denny Greene built a huge line at Minnesota that essentially had a center and 4 OTs. So, my guess is we'll draft several OTs or sign them as undrafted free agents. The days of undersized centers and guards are over.
