SCHOOL: South Park.
WHO IS HE? A 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior guard on the South Park boys' basketball team who has the Eagles off to a rousing start.
LAST WEEK: Wells led South Park to the championship of the North Hills Tournament. He had 19 points in a 71-58 victory over North Hills on Friday, and 32 in a 74-67 victory over Pine-Richland Saturday.
SEASON: Wells is averaging 25.5 points a game. South Park has a 2-0 record.
CAREER: A starter last year and one of the Eagles' top players off the bench as a sophomore. Both years, South Park made it to the WPIAL Class AAA championship game and the PIAA semifinals.
FAST START: The victories in the North Hills Tournament were impressive. Pine-Richland was the Post-Gazette's No. 2-ranked Class AAA team. Also, South Park lost three key starters from last year's team and was not expected to be as strong this year.
"Coming into those games, there was no doubt in our mind that we could beat those teams," Wells said. "It wasn't a surprise to us, but I think a lot of people thought we didn't have much coming back."
FORGET FOOTBALL: Wells was a starting defensive lineman on the football team as a junior, but did not play this season because he wanted to concentrate on basketball.
ALL IN THE FAMILY: Wells' father, Reggie Sr., is South Park's basketball coach. Ryan's brother, Reggie Jr., was a starter on South Park's basketball team the past few years. Reggie Jr.. was one of the main reasons for South Park's success, and now plays football at Clarion University. Reggie Jr. and Ryan had some physical one-on-one games with him while growing up.
"After a while, they had to stop playing against each other on a regular basis because it got to be too much," Reggie Sr. said with a laugh. "They were both so competitive and wanted to win so bad against each other. I think that's healthy and good, but you have to just pull them apart sometimes."
DIFFERENT LOOK: Ryan Wells has added 25 pounds since last season. He lifted weights five days a week this summer, and still lifts now. He also spent a few hours a day in the summer working on his basketball game.
Ryan has become more of a leader for South Park this year. Not only did Reggie Wells Jr. graduate, but so did leading scorer James Pinkston, a 6-5 center.
"Last year, I would just dish Reggie and Pinkston the ball, and they would know what to do with it," Ryan said.
Reggie Wells Sr. said, "I think what's changed is his passing. It's gotten a lot better, and he's more comfortable shooting off the dribble."
