Three Indiana State golfers placed among the top 10 individuals in the ISU Spring Invitational on Sunday and Monday at the Country Club of Terre Haute, while the Sycamores finished third in the team standings.
A trio of Sycamores tied for sixth place at 149 total strokes to lead their team on the par-72, 5,950-yard CCTH course. Briana LeMaire carded a 71 and 78, as did Sophia Florek, and Alana Gilbert shot scores of 77-72 for ISU.
The outcome marked the fourth consecutive year that the Sycamores placed third in their own tournament, dating back to 2021-22. As a team, ISU shot a combined 601 for 25-over par, with rounds of 295 and 306 to finish just behind second-place Evansville (25-over at 600) and five shots behind the winner Purdue Fort Wayne (20-over, 596). PFW won this tournament last year, as well.
Indiana State beat fourth-place UIC, which shot a 41-over 617, Valparaiso (fifth place, 52-over, 628) and Rose-Hulman (sixth place, 64-over, 640). Eastern Illinois placed seventh at 650, while Saint Mary-of-the-Woods finished eighth with a 76-over total of 652.
ISU averaged of 5.1 on par-5s as a team, the best in the field. The Sycamores' 22 birdies were most in the tournament.
For ISU, LeMaire finished 1-under par in the first round, marking three times she's done so as a Sycamore. The junior closed out the first round with six pars and two birdies. Florek in the first round finished with all pars except one hole, in which she birdied, to shoot 1-under, a new career-low round for her. Gilbert bounced back on day two after a 5-over first round to shoot even par in the second round.
Yang Tai finished tied 13th (76-78). In both rounds, she finished her last nine holes better than the opening nine, including a 1-under back nine on Day 1. Rosalie DiNunzio (77-80) closed out the five in the lineup tied in 20th place.
Also for ISU, Nicole Feistl (158, 81-77) came in tied for 23rd, while Eliza Baker (160, 77-83) and Gabby Cone (168, 81-87) finished 30th and 47th, respectively.
Rose-Hulman was led by Meg Fosnot, who tied for 13th place after shooting rounds of 79 and 75 for a final score of 154. Kate Herod and Elizabeth Ma rounded out the top-three finishers for Rose-Hulman with a tie for 37th place after finishing the tournament with scores of 163.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods posted team rounds of 324 and 328, and was led by Macie Shirk, who tied for 23rd overall with rounds of 77 and 81, finishing with a total 158 at 14-over. Renae Jaeger followed closely behind, tying for 35th with rounds of 83 and 79 (18-over). Brooklee Bussing carded a 79 on day one and added an 85 on day two to finish T40 at 20-over (164), while Sophia Boyll tied for 47th with rounds of 85 and 83 (24-over).
High school baseball
• Terre Haute North 12, Shakamak 0 — Patriot pitchers Brady Stepp and Colton Moore combined for 10 strikeouts for a five-inning, one-hit victory over the visiting Lakers on Monday at North.
Stepp worked three innings, walking two, while Moore closed the final two frames without a walk for North (now 4-0 for the season). Samm took the pitching loss for Shakamak.
At the plate, Brayden Dean doubled and singled, scored three runs and drove in two for the Patriots. Teammates Briar Goda and Nate Millington both had a hit and three runs scored; Goda also drove in a run. Moore and Chase Millington both had a hit and three RBIs. May delivered Shakamak's lone hit.
High school softball
• Clay City 9, Greencastle 0 — At Greencastle, Eels pitcher Lizzy Sinders hurled a two-hit, nine-strikeout shutout, while also going 3-for-4 at the plate with a RBI on Monday.
Also for Clay City, Faith Mitchell drilled four hits, including a home run, and had three RBI, while teammate Bri Rexrode had four hits, two runs scored and a RBI. Abigale Shearer and Ellie Stoelting added two hits each for the Eels (1-1).
College men's volleyball
• SMWC's Martinez tops RSC, NAIA defenders — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods standout Yammiel Martinez has been named not only the River States Conference Volleyball Defender of the Week, but also the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Defender of the Week.
Martinez anchored the Pomeroys' front line with a combined 17 total blocks through two matches last week, starting with a match-high eight blocks in a loss at 13th-ranked Georgetown (Ky.), followed by an even more impressive nine blocks against No. 13 Campbellsville.
College track
• Mehringer cited by MVC — Indiana State sophomore Rachel Mehringer was named the MVC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon after a dominant performance at the University of Mississippi Joe Walker Invitational.
Mehringer clocked a wind-legal 100-meter hurdles time of 13.48 seconds, cruising to a first-place finish in the event at Ole Miss. Her time was more than three-tenths of a second faster than anyone in the field, and also marked her seventh wind-legal 100 hurdles time under 13.5 since the start of last season. In addition, she also ran the first leg of Indiana State’s 4-by-100-meter relay which placed third with a time of 45.69, just one-tenth of a second off the program top-10 charts.
Mehringer owns the fastest 100 hurdles time in the MVC this season. Her time also ranks second in the Great Lakes Region, 21st in NCAA East Qualifying and 47th nationally. Indiana State’s 4x100m relay team sits third in the MVC, fifth in the Great Lakes Region and 42nd in NCAA East Qualifying.
• Pomeroys hurdler honored — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods hurdler Darrius Megnin was named the River States Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week on Monday.
At the EIU Big Blue Invitational, Megnin won the 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore bested a pair of NCAA Division I competitors with a winning time of 55.84 seconds, narrowly breaking his own school record set just one week earlier at the Pacesetter Invitational. Megnin also contributed to a strong showing in the men’s 4-by-100-meter relay. Alongside teammates Devon Bowe, MiRon Starks and Na’Sier Samuel, the Pomeroy quartet finished third with a time of 45.29 seconds.
