Royals close to signing OF Ankiel (AP)

Outfielder Rick Ankiel appears to be headed to the Royals. A team official said Friday nothing has been finalized, but the two sides are working toward a deal to bring Ankiel to Kansas City. Ankiel started his career as a pitcher with the Cardinals, going 11-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 2000 before suffering control problems in the playoffs that year.
