Greetings, residents of Arizona. Lifelong Spurs fan currently living in New Orleans. The natives send their greetings.
I have a situation that I need a ruling on. I asked for something similar from Spurs fans awhile ago, but I want the Suns-fan (non-troll) perspective. First of all, I will state that I have no problem with Arizona citizens rooting on their Suns, D-backs, and alleged football-like product. The team represents your community and you should wear their colors with pride. Even though I hate the Lakers most of all, I am fine with Californians rooting them on. What's the point of a team without fans?
This touches on some of the reasons why we ought to root for any team. As far as I can tell, there are 3: (1) They're your hometown team. I grew up in S.A., ergo, I am a 4-time Champion Spurs fan.
(2) They're consistent winners. I can understand a non-Chicagoan being a Bulls fan during the Jordan era, etc. On the other hand, it makes absolutely no sense for a Texan to root for, say, the Arizona Cardinals, because we are not from Az. and the Cards don't win.
(3) The only other reason to root for a team would be some sort of personal connection (i.e., you happen to know, or like, someone on that team). The only reason I care about the Cards is because they have Kurt Warner. If they were to cut Warner, I'd ditch that worthless franchise tomorrow.
Now, to my point ...
I grew up in San Antonio ... will always love my Spurs. I always got annoyed with Lakers fans there who had never been to L.A. Why would they root for them? Anyway, my brother-in-law, a former lifelong Spurs fan who, like me, is formS.A., converted to being a Suns fan last winter, despite (a) never having set foot in Arizona, ever, (b) the Spurs being a consistent winner, and (c) their being good guys off the court. I'd say my brother-in-law picked the wrong time to get off the bandwagon!
He said the Spurs were "old and boring." I wonder where he arrived at that fresh, cutting-edge, original opinion. He said the Suns' style of play was pleasing to eye, beautiful to behold, etc. And I agree. They're nice to watch. However ...
Is he going to dump my sister when she gets old and boring? Just because you happen to admire another team (or woman), it doesn't mean you're going to jump into bed with it (her), does it? How should I treat this obvious sports adulterer?
And ... would Suns fan even want such a "fan"? The Spurs fans said good riddance.
