During Pro Day at the U. of Arkansas one of the DB's ran a 4.2. Has anyone seen anyone faster than that. He was injured during the combines.

Darrell Green also ran a 4.2 if I recall...

I don't know how true this is but I heard that Deion was showing off for scouts and ran the 40 backwards and ran a 4.6

Again I don't know if that's folklore or what, if true the man was both a showoff and an amazing freak

yea that's fast - real fast- and can he run it play after play.

He didn't need to. The ball was always thrown on the other side of the field.

i believe that guy was Chris Houston, and he's the real deal, not just a workout freak. He shut Dwayne Jarrett from USC down.

I don't believe the 4.2 40 yd nonsense. If I remember correctly, that would be a faster 40 than the 100 meter world record holder has ever done.

I don’t think that is true.

40yds = 36.576m

The record for the 100m is Asafa Powell at 9.77 seconds. That is 1m per .0977 sec. (36.576)*(.0977) = 3.5734752 seconds

The record for 50m which is 1m per .1112secs. That would be a 40yd dash in 4.0672512 seconds.

In track and Field races, the runner must react to the starting gun, which can take 0.10 to 0.20 seconds. For electronically timed 40 yard dashes (the NFL), the runner is allowed to start when he wishes, and a timer hand-starts the clock (after a reaction time of 0.1 to 0.2 seconds).

Ben Johnson (track and field) would have been electronically timed in 4.04 to 4.14 seconds, or hand-timed in about 4.00 seconds in the 40.

In the electronic timing era, the fastest recorded time at the NFL Combine was 4.25 seconds (hand time) by cornerback Fabian Washington in 2005.

Pre or post doping?

If we are gunna take people off the list for doping we might as well count these out also -

Unofficial (hand timed) 40's -

Deion Sanders (4.17), Jerome Mathis (4.25), DeAngelo Hall (4.15), Michael Vick (4.25), Lee Suggs (4.27), Bo Jackson (4.14), Don Beebe (4.21), Michael Bennett (4.13), Randy Moss (4.25), Darrell Green (4.15, 4.2), Laveranues Coles (4.2), and Alexander Wright (4.09)

It's probably Houston. He's listed among the top 3 corners by most pundits (Mayock has him #1). Whatever his actual time, he's very very fast.

I have always wondered what the times would be like if they let them get up to full speed before they clocked off the 40. Like have a 100m dash and only count the last 40m of it

I guess I knew that but never thought about it-

you would think the NFL would have guys get in a football stance, and have somebody say "down, set..........hut" to start them

If I were a scout, I would want to know who the guys were who could tense, wait and explode on sound vs the guys who can tense and explode only when they are ready.

Only the combine is electronic timed. Pro day or personal workouts are all hand timed.

Scouts will add up to between .1 to .25 seconds to any 40 yard dash time that is done by hand. They will also add some or take away some time depending on the surface being run on compared to the combine surface. They do so to make each player on a level playing field when comparing all 40yard dash times. Scouts arent dumb, most scouts probably have him in the 4.3 range.

Also the 4.2 was and is only one scouts hand timed run, not all of them. It would be nice to see what all of their averages were. I bet his time is way closer to 4.3 then 4.2. Its still fast though.

Washington did not run a 4.25 electronic time. He ran an official combine time of 4.31.

In the electronic timing era, the fastest recorded time at the NFL Combine was 4.25 seconds (hand time) by cornerback Fabian Washington in 2005. However, his official time at the 2005 Combine was 4.31 seconds

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40_yard_dash

The combine gives out 3 times per run. 1 Electronic and 2 hand held. Washington ran twice and his fastest electronic time was the 4.31.

The fastest i heard was Joey Galloway's 4.29 at the OSU pro day a few years back.I think Ted Ginn will run faster than that. I see him running about 4.25. That is if he ever runs for the scouts ;) .
