Last night down here in Tucson Russ Ortiz made what is believed to be his first of many rehab starts. He looked very solid pitching perfect through the first 3 innings. He would have been able to get through 4 innings without giving up a run but Brian Barden dropped a double play ball with one out. Over all he went 4 innings giving up 2 hits 2 runs, 1 earned, 0 SO, 0 BB. He got alot of ground ball outs and looked to be in command of his location with the exception of the first hit he gave up in the fourth. He seemed to operate very slowly during the game and my guess would be he was thinking through every pitch and being very deliberate in what he was doing. I don't know if this is a great thing but it seemed to work ok. He used a good mixture of fastballs and breaking balls and kept hitters off balence. Hopefully he can keep it up and have some value to the Diamondbacks in the future. I'll update you next time he pitches down here for the Sidewinders.

I figured Chip Hale had to be pissed when Ortiz was ready to start the rehab assignments, especially after last year's disaster. Hopefully Ortiz does OK, but I don't expect too much out of him.

I heard that Chip didn't have a problem with it because he understands its part of being a Triple-A manager. I'm sure he was pleasently surprised with the results though.

I thought I read that Ortiz was gonna start rehabing in AA then move up to AAA. You can tell that Melvin doesn't want him sniffin the big league roster till he proves somethin. Even if he starts pitching well, you have to start him in the bullpen if he gets to the majors. We should treat him like a rook and make him earn evrything. He uses his career W/L record to justify why he is a great pitcher when it is the most overrated stat in baseball. Don't do this clown any favors, make him earn his way back onto the roster- it's a privledge, not a given.

The next issue- what to do with El Duque.... IMO, we gotta put im in the pen (he was great for the Sox in the pen last year and he has proven that he can't be effective after 4-5 innings)

I would agree. Ortiz doesn't deserve anything and should have to earn anything he gets. Don't be shocked if he has 4 or 5 starts in triple-A as Melvin hinted to.

Yes, one would hope he could eventually get out of the fifth inning against minor leaguers. Will that happen?

His pitch count was held to 50 so he was at 48 i believe at the end of the 4th after the error. He easily would have pitched into the fifth if the error hadn't been committed behind him.

Know what your talking about before you start being sarcastic. He was held to a 50 pitch count because they will start him a couple more times in Tucson. Melvin and the front office are in no hurry to get him back to the majors. 31 of his 50 pitches were for strikes and he wasn't in trouble through 4 innings (Gave up only 1 run on 2 hits). Ortiz is garbage and I don't want him on the roster but he pitched well last night and for all you know could have thrown a complete game. Sorry if I'm coming across harsh but I get defensive when a fan of another team comes in here and doesn't know what their talking about, whether it's about a clown like Russ Ortiz or a Cy Young candidate in Brandon Webb

They are stuck. No way they can trade him. They don't have to play him.
If he doesn't like hit he can arrrange a buy out or he can let them tear up his contract and let him walk. LOL

Thats not true last year his ERA in rehab starts with Tucson was like 21. He was horrible down here last year and put the Sidewinders in a few 6 or 7 run holes whne he left games.

I used the word eventually. I may be a fan of the Sox, but I have followed the Dbacks since the beginning. I was there for game 7 and I was there for Hanley Frias.

I am seriously considering putting you on ignore for just mentioning this name.

First and last time I ever did it. I take it back.
